Atlassian is continuing to hire for all open roles with all interviewing and on-boarding done virtually due to COVID-19. Everyone new to the team, along with our current staff, will temporarily work from home until it is safe to return to our offices.

Atlassian is looking for a talented principal software engineer to help scale Bitbucket to become the choice software collaboration tool for professional software teams.

Over the last two years, Bitbucket has begun to decompose our large core service into a fleet of smaller services running in Atlassian’s cloud. As we continue to break the service down into focused and more easily scalable services, we need an experienced engineer to help set the vision for the platform of the future, coordinate with teams in San Francisco and across our other offices in Sydney and Austin, and align with the practices and patterns being used throughout the company.

In addition to collaborating with Bitbucket engineering teams, you will work with Product Managers, Designers, and product leadership enable Bitbucket to continue scaling for years to come. You will directly impact our customers' experience by enabling our developers to ship more features to customers while improving reliability and performance.

On your first day, we'll expect you to have:

  • Proven understanding of micro-services oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs
  • Understanding of SaaS, PaaS, IaaS industry with hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GAE, Azure)
  • Fluency in any one database technology (e.g. RDBMS like Oracle or Postgres and/or NoSQL like DynamoDB or Cassandra)
  • Knowledge of the principles to construct fault-tolerance, reliability and durability within software systems
  • Knowledge to evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance, space and time
  • Experience in taking ownership of features, while working with a team on short and long-running projects
  • Proficiency in Java, Go, or Python
  • Experience with Distributed Version Control systems
  • Practice in mentoring other engineers and influencing decision makers throughout the organization
  • It’s awesome, but not required if you have experience working with:

  • Practical knowledge of agile software development methodologies (e.g., XP, scrum)
  • Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
  • Deep understanding of how DVCS systems work (e.g. git internals)
  • Large scale distributed systems and event-driven architectures
  • Understanding of SaaS, PaaS, IaaS industry with hands on experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GAE, Azure)
  • Speaking at conferences and to large internal audiences
  • Driving technical decision making through rapid prototyping of new systems
