SUMMARY 

  • The Optometry Division Medical Officer is responsible for advising and executing clinical strategy to enhance and provide the best possible patient experience.  This includes the management of ECP optometrists relating to clinical operations, quality of care, patient records, and provider relations. The Optometry Division Medical Officer is an administrative position. As such, he or she will not infringe upon the independent clinical judgment or practice of any employed or contracted Optometrist or optometry practice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position will be responsible for developing the clinical strategy and advising on the direction for Optometrists to support our vision to be the nation’s leading provider of clinically integrated eye care.  
    • Identify the appropriate organization structure to support our growing doctor team.  Implement, monitor and adjust as appropriate to meet the needs of the business and properly manage and engage with doctors.
    • Work with Regional Medical Directors to identify opportunities to optimize doctor coverage and identify scheduling efficiencies.
    • Focus on recruitment strategies, in partnership with ECP’s doctor recruitment team, to ensure a pipeline of doctors to fill our open positions as quickly as possible as well as forecasting future doctor needs. This includes recruiting experienced Optometrists as well as developing a strategy for recruiting recent Optometry graduates.
    • Works with HR and Legal to manage all doctor employment agreement terms and contracts, including communicating and negotiating with doctors joining as new hires and through acquisitions, and supporting ongoing renewals.
    • Work to forecast future doctor recruitment needs based on near term demand, business trends, future retirements and Company’s focus on de novo (Startup) offices.
    • Alongside support from the MEB, guide the clinical direction in our Optometry practices, which allow Optometrists to operate to the highest scope of their state licensures. 
    • Develop strategy for training of Optometrists with emphasis in clinical quality and proper coding practices. 
    • Develop and implement a consistent quality-monitoring program to focus on compliance for coding practices as well as quality of care for our patients.
  • Align the Optometry Leadership Team with Ophthalmology Leadership Team in order to support our integrated care strategy in markets where we have overlapping presence.  
    • Work with Regional Medical Directors to enhance our relationships with local Ophthalmology partners, internally and externally, to improve co-management processes.
    • Working with the MEB to guide ECP’s Medical Optometry Model, which includes but is not limited to telehealth model, market level specialty care (dry eye, pediatric, VT, ARMD) practices, technology offerings, co-management practices, etc. 
    • Work with Ophthalmology Doctor Leadership and MEB to identify opportunities to enhance doctor relationships, continuing education and networking opportunities.
  • Partner with the Optometry Division Leadership Team to identify opportunities that drive organic growth to increase same office revenue. The Optometry Division, which represents approximately $500m in annual Net Revenue (2021) across 16 states and more than 530 doctors, has an aggressive revenue growth plan through both organic and acquisition opportunities.
    • Drive patient satisfaction and an optimized patient experience including a focus on quality – quality of exam, overall experience, product recommendations, product measurements and the final fitting/dispensing of ophthalmic products.
    • Enhance the transition of a patient from their clinical experience into our dispensary for their optical experience.
    • Define optometry related key performance indicators.
    • Work with newly developed Merchandise, Planning and Allocation (MP&A) team and MEB on identifying medical/eye health product needs.  
    • Working with the MEB, stay abreast of technology enhancements, looking for opportunities to improve the patient experience.  Identify new technologies and medical equipment opportunities while defining success and potential return on investment.
  • Enhance our ECP Doctor Experience, Engagement and Satisfaction.
    • Create a practice environment where team members are highly engaged and accomplish their best results via development, communications, rewards and recognition.
    • Participate in doctor and employee experience mapping activities as we look for opportunities to improve retention and optimize satisfaction among our doctors and employees.
    • Provide consistent communication to the Optometry Division, including both doctors and staff, to align the organization to ECP’s Mission, Vision and Values.
    • Ensure a smooth onboarding experience for any doctor joining ECP through acquisition or as a newly hired employee.
    • Collaborate with Human Resources on leadership programs for Optometrists.
  • Participate in board, employee and medical team member meetings as required.
  • Align to the strategic objectives of the Company set by the executive team and carry out initiatives that support these objectives.
  • Actively stay involved in clinic and patient care by seeing patients at least 2-4 days per month.
  • Variable travel throughout the year.
  • QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • 10+ years of leadership experience 
  • Actively Licensed Optometrist for 10+ years
  • Optometry industry experience
