Position: Associate Director of Biologics Production and Characterization

Reports To: Head of Protein Sciences, Generate Biomedicines

Location: Cambridge, MA (primary); Andover, MA (secondary)

The Role:

Generate is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and innovative Associate Director of Biotherapeutics Production and Characterization to contribute to the development of our drug discovery platform and to drive delivery of our therapeutic pipeline.  She/he will be responsible for building and managing a team of scientists performing medium- and large-scale protein production using various host cell and cell-free systems across a range of different protein modalities supporting our growing portfolio of projects. The successful candidate will implement systems and strategies to deliver the highest quality protein and will provide leadership within project teams to facilitate project advancement and data feedback to our machine learning platform.  She/he will serve as a key point of contact with our Computational Sciences and our Preclinical Discovery and Development teams.  She/ he will also contribute to the building of our Process Development workflows and interface with CDMOs.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and lead team of scientists and research associates across multiple sites performing protein expression, purification, and characterization
  • Manage all protein production activities in group being accountable for planning, prioritization, and on-time delivery of generated protein variants
  • Efficiently accomplish project goals on time and budget, tracking capacity constraints and resource use within team
  • Stay scientifically current, and implement new technologies to enhance protein science capabilities with an emphasis on the machine learning data feedback loop
  • Make intellectual contributions of the biotherapeutics production team to all stages of the drug discovery process and clearly articulate deliverables, progress, and issues to drug discovery teams
  • Advise the leadership team on staff and resource needs, organizational planning, technology development, and other aspects as Generate continues to grow.
  • Manage external CROs
  • Contribute to Process Development and CMC activities at Generate, interfacing with internal PD/CMC team and CDMOs
  • Potential for project leadership opportunities

Required Skills/Experience:

  • PhD or MS in science-related discipline
  • Minimum of 8 years PhD/ 12yrs MS of biologics production experience in a biotech/pharma setting
  • Evidence of creativity in addressing challenging protein production challenges
  • 3+ years of management experience for Associate Director and 5+ years experience for Director
  • Track record of successful leadership, management, and development of multi-disciplinary teams. Strong judge of talent with the ability to make tough talent decisions.
  • Excellent communication, attention to detail, documentation and technical writing skills
  • Familiarity of regulatory issues pertaining to the manufacture of biologics
