Vesalius Therapeutics is seeking a capable and highly motivated Computational Chemist to join our growing team. As the computational chemist, you will be an essential part of an interdisciplinary team of highly creative and talented individuals responsible for setting and delivering on computational and medicinal chemistry strategies to impact project success at all stages from drug target identification through to clinical candidate nomination.
This position will report to the Senior Vice President, Drug Discovery and will be responsible for driving medicinal chemistry efforts in a fast-paced small molecule discovery research team. The successful candidate will utilize their scientific and organizational leadership to advance small molecule drugs.
What You'll Do:
- Support all aspects of the company’s computational chemistry efforts across therapeutic modalities, disease targets, and indications.
- Implementation of computational chemistry toolkits (e.g. MOE, MolSoft, OpenEye, Schrodinger) to run virtual screening campaigns to rapidly identify drug candidates for further development.
- Develop and implement computational chemistry approaches to design and triage compound ideas
- Work with a high degree of independence, to carry out structure and ligand-based design and data analysis
- Analyze all available data including biochemical and cellular SAR, ADME, and PK to drive analog designs to address key program challenges
- Collaborate with scientists from other disciplines including structural biology, biophysics, ADME/DMPK and safety sciences as part of the wider drug discovery project team.
- Discover and advance novel small molecule drugs into clinical development
- Provide strategic, scientific, and managerial leadership to medicinal chemistry team
- Define, implement, and execute on medicinal chemistry strategies
- Serve as chemistry lead (directly and/or indirectly) for discovery programs
- Collaborate with IP team to create and execute strategy to establish, protect and expand intellectual property
- Plan for and prioritize internal and external medicinal chemistry resources to achieve project goals
- Communicate, collaborate, and coordinate effectively with cross-functional teams
- Prepare, review, and deliver high quality scientific presentations for internal/external use
- Lead multidisciplinary drug discovery project teams in a fast-paced, results-driven biotech environment
What You'll Bring:
- Ph.D. degree in computational chemistry, or B.Sc./M.Sc with greater than 5 years’ experience working as a computational chemist on predominantly small molecule drug discovery projects in a Pharmaceutical or Biotech setting
- Broad experience in structure and ligand-based design, data analysis and property prediction
- A passion for drug discovery and an excellent understanding of medicinal chemistry concepts
- Innovative problem-solver, with a track record of impacting drug project delivery
- Strong oral and written communication skills, team-working and time-management skills
