Position Summary:

Generate Biomedicines is looking for highly motivated Electrical Engineer to be a part of our growing Platform Innovation team. This team works at the intersection of synthetic biology, microfluidics, microfabrication, automation, and Machine Learning to establish truly novel biological and biochemical workflows that help enable high-throughput data generation throughout the company. She/he will work as part of a team to provide computational and electrical engineering support for our microfluidic technologies and for our synthetic biology workflows, with an emphasis on miniaturization and ultra-fast data acquisition. This may include development and implementation of PCB and FPGA based designs for control and signal processing applications. She/he will develop ownership of her/his workflow and work autonomously, but at the same time be a resource for employees outside the team and collaborate to reach creative solutions. The ideal candidate has a quantitative mindset and great attention to detail. She/he has excellent communication skills, is motivated to learn new skills and driven to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, implement and test software/electronics for a range of novel microfluidics assays, including digital microfluidics and micro-automation.
  • Develop and implement PCB and/or FPGA based designs for control and signal processing applications.
  • Work together with team members to prototype miniaturized devices.
  • Oversee workflows, and, if necessary, suggest creative and effective improvements.
  • Work flexibly and independently as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced scientific environment.
  • Present data within cross-functional settings.
  • Document results in ELNs and write SOPs. 

Qualifications:

  • MSc (or equivalent) in electrical engineering, computer science, or biosystems engineering with an emphasis on electronics/robotics.
  • 2+ year(s) of relevant experience, preferably within the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry. 
  • Direct experience using microcontrollers, e.g. Arduino
  • Proficiency in programming languages, including Python and LabView or similar is required.
  • Experience with PCB design is required; FPGA programming is highly desirable.
  • Experience with any of the following is desirable: Digital Mirror Devices, 3D printing and/or CNC machining.
  • Willingness to learn microdevice design, fabrication, and testing.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to effectively work as part of a team required.
