Position Summary:

Generate Biomedicines is looking for an outstanding protein engineer to be a part of a growing protein sciences department that is leveraging automated high-throughput platforms in multiple areas of protein production and characterization workflows. The individual will contribute to workflows that include construct design, protein expression, purification, and characterization of proteins across diverse modalities and scales ranging from 96 well plate-based cultures to multiple liters in shake flasks.  This position will focus on the design and production of recombinant proteins for a range of downstream activities including antibody discovery, structural biology, and biophysical characterization.  They will be responsible for designing experiments and includes the opportunity to be a functional representative to program teams to collaborate cross-functionally to drive projects forward.  This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a fast-paced, start-up environment with a great culture.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Protein construct design across a wide range of protein types and modalities for diverse downstream applications.
  • Developing and optimizing methods for the expression, purification, and biophysical characterization of complex protein modalities at small and large scale.
  • Protein expression across multiple expression systems including mammalian, insect and E. coli
  • Multi-step purifications across different affinity tags, secondary columns and polishing steps using AKTA systems.
  • Assessing protein quality metrics such as purity and monodispersity through analytical techniques (SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, Analytical Size Exclusion)
  • Explore, assess, and bring in-house state of the art technologies to enhance and continuously improve efficiencies across internal platforms.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in recombinant protein design and production to different cross functional teams.
  • Detailed documentation of experiments and data on our internal LIMS systems, electronic notebook and presentations to project teams.

Preferred skills:

  • Molecular biology methodologies involved in DNA workflows
  • Operation of liquid handling robots and automated purification systems (Hamilton, Biomek, AmMag, Phynexus)
  • Providing protein reagents for CryoEM and familiarity with associated downstream workflows such as grid screening (Vitrobot, Chameleon)
  • Experience with producing and working with recombinant Integral Membrane Proteins (GPCRs, Ion Channels) in different formulations (VLPs, detergents, nanodiscs).
  • Excellent attention to detail, documentation, and communication skills
  • Outstanding team player with a focus on collaboration.

Education and Industry Experience:

  • Minimum of B.S degree with 5+ years industry experience, or MS with 3+ years of industry experience or PhD with 1-3 years of industry experience
