About the Role

We are looking for an engineering leader who has experience growing and scaling remote teams and building a productive culture of collaboration. As Director of Engineering for Kraken’s new banking product you’ll be responsible for the build and rollout of new banking products that extend Kraken’s offering. This is new and uncharted territory in banking and a unique opportunity to lead the banking industry.

We are looking for an Engineering Director who is comfortable with:
- Growing and managing Backend Engineering, SRE, and SDET teams
- Delivering highly reliable distributed systems to our clients and stakeholder
- Experience working with cloud platforms like AWS
- Strong knowledge and experience across SRE / DevOps and software engineering principles

This role does not require day to day coding, however you will need to be comfortable leading, guiding and directing the architectural and technical journey. You will work with a world-class team of engineers building Kraken's infrastructure using Rust.

Responsibilities

  • Building and scaling backend, SRE, and SDET engineering teams 
  • Define technical vision and manage and execute against projects and delivery commitments, and contribute to our product strategy and roadmap
  • Design and lead continuous delivery for a multi-year technical roadmap, balancing short- and long-term goals and objectives
  • Manage and inspire software engineers to innovate, invent, implement, and deploy complex software solutions in a commercial, mission-critical environment
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers and senior leadership to turn our vision into a tangible roadmap quarter-over-quarter
  • Partner closely with Product Management and Technology Project Development to create, drive, and deliver innovative, compelling, and user-friendly products and get the projects done on time
  • Partner with leadership team for driving NFR, Modernization initiatives and partner with Risk for Risk /Audit requirements as required
  • Have one on one meetings with your direct reports, indirect reports and external partners weekly, biweekly, and monthly 
  • Coach your direct reports to have a positive impact on their teams and on the organization and chart a fulfilling career path
  • Develop and grow leadership talent through active mentoring, coaching, succession planning, and retention strategies for key talent in a growing, competitive economic environment
  • Headcount planning and allocating resources across the workgroups appropriately
  • Be a thoughtful technical voice and support your team in making diligent architectural decisions
  • Requirements

  • 8-10 years fintech, banking, financial services or payment experience in software engineering at a product and engineering firm
  • Strong software product development / management experience around cloud based software / platforms
  • Strong people and technical leadership, preferably in a scaling organisation, fast growth start-up
  • Strong experience running and leading a 24x7 financial platform that requires ensuring SLAs and responding to incidents
  • Proven experience as a business-focused engineering leader at a hyper-growth company. (Tell us how you 10x’d a team!)
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-moving technology landscape and keep pace with the latest thinking and new technologies
  • An understanding of risk and compliance in banking with the ability to value and advise on the trade-offs of different technical solutions
