The Energy Management & Sustainability Specialist plays an essential role in growing talent in our business through collaboration and sharing best practices with the Sustainability, Retail, Manufacturing and Distribution teams. The Sustainability team is part of the broader Ethics Stream at Lush which includes Ethical Buying, Charitable Givings and Ethical Campaigns. As a vertically integrated business, we operate our own supply chain, manufacture and distribute our own product, design/build and operate our own shops and develop our own brand communications. Reporting to the Sustainability Manager and working closely with various teams, your core RESPONSIBILITIES will include:

Project Management – Retail, Manufacturing & Distribution 

  • Identify and drive improvements in building systems and operational performance and process innovation in the areas of energy efficiency, water conservation and waste through a strong understanding of production processes across multiple manufacturing and distribution facilities  
  • Drive improvements in energy and water efficiency, green building designand sustainable materials and innovation through our evolving portfolio of 270+ retail shops  
  • Lead sustainable innovation in shop retrofits and build-outs in partnership with Shop Design and Property & Construction 
  • Draw on technical expertise to identify opportunities, define scope/design, quantify savings and build business cases to gain support and resources for sustainability projects  
  • Manage multiple projects from planning to execution, prioritising tasks and engaging/coordinating stakeholders to execute on time and budget  
  • Evaluate opportunities and drive improvements in water conservation/efficiency and industrial water treatment/recycling  
  • Collaborate on budgeting and multi-year capital planning  

Strategy & Metrics  

  • Collaborate in strategic planning and strategy development including but not limited to our climate strategy, energy and carbon targets, renewable energy and lifecycle assessments  
  • Develop Scope 3 strategy around supply chain, including lifecycle assessments and partnership with Ethical Buying & Procurement 
  • Develop and advance renewable energy strategy and energy management planning to achieve our science based targets commitment.   
  • Analyze environmental and financial metrics to evaluate areas for improvement, influence project decision making and demonstrate measurable results  

Engagement & Communications 

  • Build strong working relationships with manufacturing (facilities, factory management, production and retail (design, architects, construction, repairs and maintenance) to serve as go-to technical specialist on energy/carbon, water management and green building design  
  • Create tools/resources to support the understanding of sustainable building systems that drive decision making and behaviour change  
  • Manage RFPs, contract negotiations, contractors, purchase ordersbilling and government incentives 

 

You bring the following QUALIFICATIONS 

Required: 

  • 7+ years of progressive practical experience in energy and environmental management and building design, in manufacturing, distribution, commercial/industrial and retail buildings 
  • 3+ additional years of professional related work experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (mechanical/environmental/process/chemical engineering or similar) 
  • Technical background and experience in industrial water and wastewater management, renewable energy and building mechanical system operation, including HVAC, boiler, and refrigeration systems 
  • Proven experience leading industrial and retail energy management, including portfolio bench-marking and analysis, preferably for up to 200+ locations 
  • Practical experience applying green building frameworks and performance tools to existing building design 
  • Familiarity with project specifications, architectural drawings and interior building design/construction 
  • Excellent project management skills – strong organization, time management and ability to manage priorities and meet competing deadlines on time and budget 
  • Practical experience in change management, influencing culture and behaviors for successful implementation of sustainability initiatives  
  • Strong business case development and experience in multi-year capital projecplanning and budgeting 
  • Understanding of environmental regulations, building codes, ASHRAE and other applicable codes and standards  
  • Strong communicator and relationship builder with an open mindset to get curious and learn  
  • Strong analytical skills – you love excel sheets and diving into numbers to understand the drivers and tell the story  
  • Proactive and solutions oriented with the ability to be flexible and adaptable; thrive in a dynamic environment to effectively manage and meet multiple deadlines  
  • Team player with the desire to collaborate and support team priorities and initiatives  

Preferred: 

  • Experience in process or mechanical engineering, continuous improvement, lean manufacturing and change management  
  • Graduate degree or equivalent training and certifications (Masters in Engineering, Certified Environmental Professional, Certified Energy Manager, P.Eng, EIT, LEED AP/Green Associate), or equivalent knowledge in these area 
  • Experience with lifecycle assessment, biodiversity and land use 

 

This role will ideally be based in Vancouver with close proximity to our manufacturing and distribution stakeholders.
