The Sustainability team is part of the broader Ethics Stream at Lush which includes Ethical Buying, Charitable Givings and Ethical Campaigns. As a vertically integrated business, we operate our own supply chain, manufacture and distribute our own product, design/build and operate our own shops and develop our own brand communications. The Sustainability team leads the development and integration of our vision and environmental initiatives to create a cosmetic revolution to save the planet and the leave the world Lusher than we found it.

The Sustainability Manager is responsible for collaborating with the Ethics Stream and senior leadership to create an inspiring and meaningful vision for the business while partnering with cross functional teams across the business to develop and implement environmental strategies and programs that support the vision and goals. You lead, empower and support the development of the team.

Your key focus areas for the term of this contract include leading the team through delivery of the first year of our 2030 ethics roadmap which include climate and energy (advancing our science-based targets commitment, fossil fuel free and climate positive work), circularity and sustainable packaging (evolving take-back and exploring refill and packaging alternatives), zero waste and water conservation and restoration.

In addition, you are responsible for collaborating with our Brand, Comms/Engagement and People & Culture teams to further the development of engagement and communications strategies that support our ethics vision and goals. You are a relationship builder with strong people and project management skills who can effectively navigate in dynamic environments to create value and drive results.

Reporting to our COO, your core responsibilities include:

 

Strategic Planning & Program Management

  • Continue to build upon the sustainability vision, strategy, framework, goals and road-map in collaboration with executive leadership – focus areas during the contract term include year one of our 2030 Ethics Strategy, advancing our science-based targets commitment and renewable energy + climate positive strategies, building the next phase of our circular/sustainable packaging work, delivering on our zero waste milestone and improving our water position.
  • Drive strategies that integrate environmental principles into operational functions across the business - manufacturing, retail, ethical buying, ethical campaigns, brand communications, people and training, shop design, construction, finance and capital planning. 
  • Collaborate across departments to build sustainability initiatives, develop businesses cases, coordinate cross functional efforts and facilitate alignment and successful implementation of new and existing programs
  • Lead program integration with Ethical Buying, Lush Investments, Charitable Giving’s, Ethical Campaigns and Lush UK
  • Manage engagements and partnerships with suppliers and industry organizations to improve our environmental impact related to energy and climate, water, zero waste, sustainable packaging and circularity and ethical buying and procurement

Engagement, Training & Communications     

  • Lead and oversee the development and roll-out of sustainability training, engagement and resources across the business – focus during this contract term is on execution of year one of the engagement roadmap
  • Collaborate with Brand on strategy and content development for sustainability integration through external and internal channels – focus during this contract term includes a shift/revamp of external comms related to our ethics and sustainability work
  • Prioritize and align the focus of the sustainability program to support Lush’s brand identity as a values and purpose-driven brand and to enhance brand recognition in the industry and with customers as a leader in sustainability. 

Measurement & Reporting

  • Manage the communication of internal and external reporting of sustainability performance indicators to support the integration of KPIs in business updates, influence decision making, show measurable progress toward overall goals and update on key program areas
  • Provide direction for setting sustainability goals and targets for Lush North America with executive leadership input – focus during this contract term includes advancing our science based targets commitment and scope 3 reductions (supply chain, freight, travel)

Team Development & Budgeting

  • Lead with authenticity to engage and support a collaborative team environment, facilitating growth and open discussion  
  • Manage department operating and capital budgets

 

Skills and experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in sustainability, corporate environmental and social responsibility leadership role, and internal business/change management or management consulting
  • Proven experience embedding sustainability within organizations, managing projects and programs and engaging executive leadership
  • Strategic thinker and problem solver who can navigate effectively in a dynamic environment to effect change and create positive value and impact
  • Ability to influence, motivate and build buy-in and consensus amongst all levels of the organization
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to leverage and lead cross functional teams to achieve aligned goals and outcomes
  • Exceptional organization, facilitation and project management skills
  • Leadership ability to create, develop and foster high performing teams
  • Strong analytical abilities to evaluate economic and environmental performance indicators to guide decision making
  • Experience managing operating and capital budgets
  • Adaptable and flexible with the ability to thrive, prioritize and multi-task in a dynamic environment
  • Industry connections and knowledge on leading sustainability trends/challenges/issues, environmental compliance, and retail and manufacturing best practices
  • Strong moral and ethical values, leads by example
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (Business, Sustainability, Environmental Management) or equivalent professional experience

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree in related field (Business, Sustainability, Environmental Management) or equivalent professional experience to a master’s degree
  • Hands-on experience leading and implementing programs in multi-unit retail and manufacturing operations

 

This role will ideally be based on Vancouver with close proximity to our manufacturing and distribution stakeholders however we will also be open to remote applicants.
