Lyft is looking for a Director to run its Public Affairs team within its Public Policy organization. Reporting to the VP of Public Engagement, this person will run the messaging operation for the Lyft policy team by crafting messaging and storytelling around Lyft’s policy goals related to providing economic opportunities for millions of drivers and safe, affordable riders to tens of millions of passengers. In addition, this person will be essential in telling the holistic story of Lyft’s social impact programs, including its City Works initiative, and its demonstrated commitment to leading in a values-based manner.

The Public Affairs Director will create, shape and develop Lyft’s public policy messaging. The Director will use public opinion research, social listening and other creative approaches to help guide message development and then will develop interactive, dynamic and engaging ways to delivering that message to our core audiences. 

The Director will coordinate with the Community Engagement, Social Impact, Campaigns, and Partnerships teams to create an overall message strategy. In addition, the Public Affairs Director manages and coaches the Public Affairs team to design and execute social media content and advertising campaigns that engage our community, policymakers, influencers, and the broader public. 

The ideal candidate will be an innovative message and content strategist with significant experience and expertise in developing and driving a consistent message. They will work closely with Lyft’s Communications and Marketing teams and will thrive in a cross-functional collaborative work setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing and coaching a team of Public Affairs Managers and Messaging and Content Strategists to create the messaging framework around a host of policy issues
  • Developing a strategic framework for policy messaging deliverables, including one-pagers, social media content, videos, emails, Q&A documents, and other collateral
  • Guiding team efforts to tell the compelling story of Lyft’s drivers, riders and community allies through engaging digital content
  • Guiding team efforts to tell the story of Lyft’s Social Impact work, especially our Wheels for All program that focuses on transportation access for communities in need
  • Developing a process for the team to develop messaging toolkits for the Community Engagement and Government Relations teams, among others
  • Leading the creation and development of all digital messaging campaigns for the policy team, including digital advertising and online content
  • Creating the process to manage all outside consultants and vendors 
  • Managing the Public Affairs budget
  • Working collaboratively with other teams across the company to ensure that our policy messaging is integrated throughout

Experience:

  • 10+ years working in communications, public affairs, messaging or digital strategy for companies, nonprofits or campaigns  
  • Significant management experience, including running large teams, managing remote staff and a track record of developing talent and coaching team members to excel at their highest level
  • Crafting and executing digital, TV and other advertising campaigns a strong plus
  • Excellent writing skills a must, with a particularly strong ability to condense complicated matters into digestible, engaging content
  • Strong verbal skills and an ability to train others on delivering an effective message
