Lyft’s engineering team is growing rapidly, and we are looking for an Engineering Director to help us scale. Our engineers are curious, flexible, and love solving difficult challenges. They look to their leaders for organizational transparency, career development, mentorship, and honest feedback. They move fast and ship code to production continuously, relying on their leadership to increase productivity by removing obstacles and keeping processes lean. Our engineering directors are people with varying technical backgrounds and interests -- some are involved in the technical details of their team and others provide general technical direction and oversight. As an Engineering Director, our job is to keep teams efficient and building on the right goals. We build teams that are inclusive, helpful, and have a passion for the things they build.

We are a set of engineers trying our best to create an amazing experience for our customers and ourselves, and believe data brings everything together. We build and operate the platform used by the company for stream and batch computation serving mechanisms to train ML models. You will lead an experienced engineering team and work alongside passionate leaders on challenging distributed systems problems. Responsibilities:

  • You will lead a team of experienced engineers who like to ship code and tackle hard engineering problems.
  • You will mentor the professional and technical development of your team members.
  • Help develop their careers, and assign them to projects tailored to their skill levels, personalities, work styles, and professional goals.
  • You will build teams that are collaborative, inclusive, and respectful of each other.
  • You will create plans for prioritizing technical and resourcing challenges in your organization.
  • You will instill a spirit of improvement in the team’s code, architecture, and processes.
  • You will work with the Lyft recruiting team to hire candidates from diverse backgrounds.
  • You will assist your team to build relationships throughout the company with Support, Marketing, Ops, BizDev, or other teams to ensure Lyft’s continuing success.

Experience:

  • You have over 10+ years of data engineering experience specifically platform/streaming experience
  • You have a B.S. in computer science or electrical engineering; M.S. preferred
  • You have experience managing and scaling inspired teams of engineers
  • You have a deep familiarity with Big Data infrastructure technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Presto. 
  • You manage diverse relationships and communicating with leadership across multiple organizations and regionally-based teams
  • Comfortable where decisions you make will have a large impact
