At Lyft, our mission is to improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation. To do this, we start with our own community by creating an open, inclusive, and diverse organization.

And self-driving cars are critical to that mission: they can make our streets safer, cities greener, and traffic a thing of the past. That’s why we started Level 5, our self-driving division, where we’re building a self-driving system to operate on the Lyft network.

Level 5 is looking for doers and creative problem solvers to join us in developing the leading self-driving system for ride sharing. Our team members come from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, and each has the opportunity to have an outsized influence on the future of our technology. Our world-class software and hardware experts work in brand new garages and labs in Palo Alto, California, and offices in London, England and Munich, Germany. And we’re moving at an incredible pace: we’re currently servicing employee rides in our test vehicles on the Lyft app. Learn more at lyft.com/level5.

At Lyft Level 5, we know that simulation is absolutely indispensable in the process of innovation and greatly reduces the risk and costs during the race towards fully autonomous vehicles. At the Simulation team, we create a virtual world in which both augmented real world data and synthetically generated data are used to help accelerate the training, prototyping and validation of autonomous vehicles.  The aspiration is to model millions of situations in this virtual world and having the virtual vehicle powered by our autonomy software stack driven billions of miles, before they are deployed to Lyft’s world class transportation network.

Responsibilities:

  • Create accurate 3D virtual environments to simulate autonomous vehicles in realistic situations, from intersection scale to city scale
  • Implement smart actors and agents in the virtual environment that closely mimic their real-world behaviors
  • Solve difficult modeling, mathematical, and implementation problems with a focus on the accuracy of simulation results, and reliability and performance of the software
  • Integrate the simulation with existing regression testing frameworks and making it an integral part of autonomy software
  • Collaborate with the rest of the team to develop and maintain a physically-accurate, reliable, and fast simulation toolkit
  • Collaborate closely with the autonomous software team to effectively use simulation environment developed

Experience:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Math, Physics, or related technical fields
  • 5+ years relevant work experience or equivalent graduate work
  • Experience of developing C++ code on Linux
  • Experience with physical system modeling and simulation
  • Experience with software handling large data sets with performance
  • Exceptional ability to produce maintainable and highly testable code with great design
  • Thrive in a fast-paced and collaborative work environment where your impact is highly visible
  • Passionate about autonomous vehicle technology and its potential to improve the world
  • (Nice to Have): Experience developing virtual world environment for games, such as Lumberyard, Unity3d, Unreal, CryEngine and/or other world simulation environments
  • (Nice to Have): Experience with graphics APIs and frameworks such as OpenGL, DirectX, or Vulkan
  • (Nice to Have): Experience with physics engines (e.g. Bullet, Havok, PhysX)
  • (Nice to Have): Experience developing agent behaviors, physics, gameplay, tools, or GUIs
  • (Nice to Have): Knowledge of common geographical coordinate systems, spatial data infrastructure and common GIS applications
  • (Nice to Have): Deep understanding and hands-on knowledge of Deep Learning and its applications in autonomous driving system
  • (Nice to Have): Experience in robotics, real time systems, embedded system, or self-driving technologies
  • (Nice to Have): Working knowledge of various sensor technologies including camera, RADAR, LIDAR, ultrasonic, and vehicle state sensors
  • (Nice to Have): Understanding of hardware modules and systems, system identification and sensor/actuators simulation

Benefits:

  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options
  • In addition to 11 observed holidays, salaried team members have unlimited paid time off, hourly team members have 15 days paid time off
  • 401(k) plan to help save for your future
  • 18 weeks of paid parental leave. Biological, adoptive, and foster parents are all eligible
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Lyft Pink -  Lyft team members get an exclusive opportunity to test new benefits of our Ridership Program
