The database market is massive (the IDC estimates it to be $106B+ by 2024!) and MongoDB is at the head of its disruption. The MongoDB community is transforming industries and empowering developers to build amazing apps that people use every day. We are the leading modern data platform and the first database provider to IPO in over 20 years. Join MongoDB and see what kind of impact you can make on the company and on the world.

The web team at MongoDB builds global web experiences that help MongoDB connect with developers and technical leaders around the world. We make reusable systems and components that help us scale our impact – design systems, localization pipelines, form processors, authoring tools, experimentation systems. We also build novel experiences that demonstrate our products, showcase our brand, and grow our business.

We’re looking for a technical leader to help transform the platform and experiences for our flagship website, www.mongodb.com. Lead a team of web engineers building a new design system, integrating a new CMS, producing immersive and compelling web experiences, and delivering a wide variety of capabilities to internal content producers.

This role can be based out of our New York City office or remotely in North America.

Our ideal candidate

  • Has 2+ years of experience in people management on a software engineering team.
  • Has 5+ years of experience building production-ready web sites or web applications.
  • Understands the modern web ecosystem, tooling, and patterns and can provide code review and technical leadership for front-end and back-end web developers (our stack includes MongoDB, Express, React, Node, TypeScript, AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform).
  • Can lead a team building accessible, compatible, optimized, resilient, scalable global websites, and enjoys collaborating cross-functionally with analysts, designers, product managers, and other stakeholders in the organization.
  • Has a point of view on common software engineering management concerns, including how to improve quality; how to manage technical debt; and how to keep teams happy and productive.
  • Wants to establish a strong engineering culture and help a great team of engineers grow their skills and careers.

Responsibilities

  • Balance priorities between technical mentorship and system architecture (roughly 60%), people management (roughly 30%), and occasional hands-on work (roughly 10%).
  • Maintain a technical roadmap and work with product leadership to prioritize it.
  • Understand product requirements, design technical solutions, and help the team ship a great website.
  • Monitor team and system performance and proactively improve them.
  • Mentor, coach, and grow junior and senior engineers (including hiring & performance reviews).
  • Share responsibility for the success of our web products with a group of superb cross-functional colleagues.

Success measures

  • In the first month, you'll meet the team (peers, leaders, and reports), learn about the projects underway and the major initiatives planned, and ask a lot of great questions.
  • Within 3 months, you will have successfully established a good working relationship with close peers on the web team, set up a regular cadence of meetings with your reports, and participated in at least one technical assessment and recommendation for a major initiative.
  • Within 6 months, you will understand the strengths, growth areas, and career aspirations of the individuals on your team. Your team will have launched several major features and you’ll be sketching ideas for how they can do even better on the next one. You’ll have delegated parts of technical leadership to more senior members of the team.
  • In 12 months, you'll have performed a full cycle of performance and growth conversations with team members. You will own a technical roadmap that you developed and championed with your cross-functional peers and you’ll have a plan for accomplishing it. You’ll have formalized technical leadership within the team and helped engineers on the team grow into those roles.
