You are a technology expert and someone people feel comfortable asking for help. You can work on an N-tier site, are comfortable working with your peers and explain technology to others. You have experience with Scrum or Kanban and Agile. You understand and are an advocate for test-driven development. You can explain why a broken build is a bad thing. You can explain the relationship between your test suite and refactoring. 
As a Site Reliability Engineer, you will work closely with our development team to provide high availability services to millions of users. You will provide input on and execute security and deployment practices, scaling and metrics, as well as running general day-to-day server management. You must have the ability to think quickly on your feet and respond diligently to issues. 
You are interested in the latest tools and standards, but have also worked with older technology. 
We do work as an integrated cross-functional team - you will work with a ScrumMaster/Technical Project Manager for delivery. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring a high level of quality in both development and infrastructure. 

Essential functions and responsibilities:

  • Minimum 5+ years professional experience
  • Part of team supporting operational and project related activities 
  • System installation and configuration experience in a virtualized environment
  • Produce high-quality code with unit and functional tests to prove functionality
  • Able to setup, configure and articulate the merits of using CI tools and CD process delivery (strongly opinionated).
  • Understands system interactions and architectures 
  • Implement build configuration solutions
  • Develop scripts and application to automate system deployment, scaling and infrastructure
  • Comfortable making technical decisions including presenting ideas and providing constructive feedback to teammates
  • Analyze and understand flows and end-to-end interactions for a distributed system
  • Create software to automate deployment of applications to production environments
  • Enhances system architecture to improve continuous software integration and deployment model within a DevOps environment 
  • Good understanding of DevSecOps best practices 
  • Implements new tools and frameworks to support application architecture. Coordinate evaluation of tools and frameworks for the engineering team
  • Ability to comfortably uphold and/or championing best practices like code review, documentation, testing, etc 
  • Be an active member of Nortal’s technology information sharing community
  • Education and Experience

  • Experience with building and running Docker containers 
  • Running and troubleshooting moderately complex Kubernetes clusters 
  • Experience with CI/CD processes
  • Solid Unix/Linux system administration and troubleshooting skills 
  • Solid experience with Git 
  • Shell Scripting experience 
  • Ability to ramp up with new technologies or programming languages quickly 
  • Experience supporting servers (Apache, Nginx, Tomcat, JBoss, etc.) 
  • Experience in secrets management systems 
  • Experience in one or more System Monitoring and Observability Tools: (CloudWatch, Elastic,NewRelic, Splunk, etc) 
  • Able to meet objectives with little or no direct supervision 
  • Excellent communication skills and flexibility 
  • Nice to Have

  • 3+ years experience as an SRE/Unix Systems Admin/Engineer in operations of a large-scale enterprise 
  • Experience on at least one cloud platform i.e. AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
  • Scripting experience with Python 
  • Experience in one or more Infrastructure As Code languages (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM, etc)
  • Identify performance issues with software applications and troubleshoot performance problems in distributed systems
  • Experience using service meshes
