In this position, as a member of our growing Privacy & Product legal team, you will help foster innovation by managing and growing Okta’s intellectual property portfolio and related rights and obligations. 

This position will report into the Vice President & Associate General Counsel, Privacy & Product, who is based in Okta’s San Francisco headquarters.  The ideal candidate will be located on the west coast, but other locations will be considered. 

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with our Engineering and Product Management teams to manage and expand Okta’s patent portfolio, and work with external patent counsel in the U.S. and abroad, to ensure full protection of Okta’s innovative technologies; 
  • Partner with Okta’s Marketing and Product Management teams to protect Okta’s trademarks, and to allow partners and other stakeholders, where appropriate, to license Okta’s trademarks and use them in accordance with the company’s branding usage guidelines;
  • Ensure that use of inbound-licensed intellectual property (whether commercially-licensed components, or open source or other freely-available software) complies with applicable license agreements and other legal requirements;
  • Ensure that outbound-licensed intellectual property (including open source software) is made available to stakeholders pursuant to Okta’s policies;
  • Counsel Okta’s business units and product teams, when necessary, regarding domain name registrations and related projects;
  • Advise other legal and cross-functional teams at the organization on matters related to Okta’s IP strategy.

Qualifications

  • Combination of 10-15 years of experience at a top tier law firm and in-house, preferably at an enterprise cloud computing company;
  • Juris doctor degree and membership within U.S. Patent & Trademark Office bar;
  • Ability to work independently to assess risk, engage in early assessment while gaining the trust of business stakeholders to achieve a desired objective
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team handling risk management programs and global initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to clearly articulate and visually present complex legal issues for non-legal, cross functional teams
  • Willing to help where needed with a can-do attitude, all while maintaining a great sense of humor
