Lead Process Engineer, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD)
Location: FREMONT, CA

As Lead Process Engineer, ALD, you will be in charge of tool ownership and sustaining and for processes development of novel superconducting films for building quantum integrated circuits. You will spend your time immersed in the hands-on fabrication and development of these devices and working closely with integration, design, and quantum engineering teams on scoping and integrating ALD structures into our standard flows in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working with vendors and internal customers for purchase, installation, and qualification of new tools
  • Responsible for establishing and submitting process requirements to be met in designing and acquiring new ALD equipment
  • Responsible for working with tool vendors and suppliers to develop new capabilities
  • Drive improvements in ALD systems and processes including pre/post substrate treatments and precursor selection
  • Experience with deposition of various materials/precursors and material optimization through crystal structure, chemical, and electrical properties. Experience with superconductivity is a plus
  • Experience with common thin-film characterization techniques including XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and Ellipsometry
  • Responsible for connecting process conditions, physical properties, and characteristics with electrical end-of-line data toward understanding mechanisms and proposing development paths
  • Must have a deep understanding of process variability and process windows, and experience in producing repeatable and predictable processes and yields
  • Responsible for tool ownership, maintaining high uptime for the tools, and working closely with facilities, production, and engineering teams
  • Responsible for developing, owning, and establishing monitors that assess process or tool health and serve as predictors of product performance
  • Responsible for hands-on work with module engineering, integration, and production teams to resolve design, process, and integration issues and deliver quantum integrated circuits with predictable quality and yields
  • Should have good planning skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Additional responsibilities

  • Day-to-day process duties include sustaining, driving continuous improvement projects, and working with integration and development teams to develop new processes
  • Organize data, draw correlations from process interactions, and present results in a concise fashion
  • Understand present and future ALD challenges and requirements and communicate these regularly to stakeholders
  • Work with other fab team members, be responsible for tools, process, material, and metrology
  • Establish metrics, monitors, and process controls to run an efficient and predictable process and tools
  • Work with facilities and tool suppliers to maintain high uptime of tools and module
  • Responsible for equipment and process calibration and monitors
  • Show ability to work independently and manage stakeholders; Show ability to deal with ambiguity in defining activities and direction
  • A high degree of comfort balancing the needs of a semiconductor fab with a flexible, agile startup environment
  • A key member of the team to help establish Rigetti Fab as a leading quantum integrated circuit foundry
  • About You

  • Masters with up to 10 years experience, or a Ph.D. with up to 5 years experience with relevant hands-on experience in physics, chemistry, materials science, or equivalent background
  • Hands-on experience with ALD process development and semiconductor tools
  • Working knowledge of SPC, root-cause fixes, and application of containment solutions 
  • Understanding downstream, upstream, and end-of-line interactions is a plus
  • Comfortable working in a Clean Room environment, including hygiene protocols and hazmat handling protocols
  • Excellent oral communication skills, ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • A high degree of comfort with a flexible, agile small company environment
  • Comfortable with MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, JMP, Google-docs, and Google-sheets is a plus
