Quantum Engineer, Simulation

As a Quantum Engineer, you will drive systematic improvements through Rigetti Computing’s full-stack quantum computing architecture. You will lead the design and execution that turns experiments into advanced hardware functionality: pushing new demands into the engineering organization and pulling novel capabilities into state-of-the-art systems. You will rapidly and tenaciously elevate physics breakthroughs into stable technology, working closely with a uniquely diverse team of engineers.

As scientific and engineering leaders, we value diversity and are committed to building a culture of inclusion to attract and engage innovative thinkers. Our technology, meant to serve all of humanity, cannot succeed if those who built it do not mirror the diversity of the communities we serve. Applications from women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged.

Your training and achievements as a physicist in quantum information mean that you, more than anyone else, already know how hard this will be. And that’s why you’ve sought us out.

  • Build software that simulates superconducting circuit Hamiltonians based on designed qubit geometry and wafer metrology data recorded at room temperature.
  • Lead the process of selecting the best candidate chips from fabricated wafers for quantum characterization in dilution refrigerators.
  • Regularly extract calibration factors from experimental data that ensure simulations are accurate and precise.
  • Act as a key facilitator between quantum engineers and fabrication engineers, translating specifications and requirements in each direction.
  • Using insights from simulation, work with colleagues to continuously improve Hamiltonian design, fabrication process, circuit layout, and Josephson junction operations.
  • Deliver the best possible chips to make optimal use of our most precious resource: physicist and dilution refrigerator time.
  • About You:

  • Graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Physics/Applied Physics/EE.
  • Command of circuit QED principles.
  • Track record of meaningful accomplishments in quantum science.
  • Extensive experience in numerical simulation and/or theoretical physics.
  • Coding experience in Python (specifically, with scientific / data science packages like numpy, pandas, jupyter, etc), as well as interacting with SQL databases.
  • Position may require the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Nice to have:

  • Prior technical role in an industry or start-up environment.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical concepts.
  • Prior experience with Josephson physics.
  • Prior experience in version control/software packaging (i.e. git repositories).
  • As we continue to navigate these unprecedented times, we have committed to prioritizing the health and safety of our employees and have adopted a virtual interview process. This position will be based out of our Berkeley headquarters and may be required to work remotely temporarily.  Longer-term, this position will likely be a hybrid role (primarily onsite with some remote work opportunities).
