ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY TECHNICIAN

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Technicians at SpaceX are responsible for regulatory requirements relating to OSHA, RCRA, EPA, and DOT requirements. In this role, you will be responsible for working with engineers and technicians daily to ensure our manufacturing facility can support Starship manufacturing goals while meeting all environmental, health, and safety objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Environmental
    • Responsible for environmental compliance with all applicable regulations including but not limited to EPA/RCRA, US Fish and Wildlife, US Coast Guard, TCEQ, TXDOT, TX Parks and Wildlife, TX General Land Office, and Railroad Commission of Texas
    • Perform tasks related to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulatory hazardous waste handling, storage and disposal requirements
    • Monitor and manage levels of hazardous waste at each department’s satellite accumulation area
    • Ensure all waste is properly labeled and stored according to its classification
    • Record and maintain 90-day hazardous waste drum logs, hazardous waste sign in sheets, and VOC Solvent usage logs
    • Perform all required hazardous waste and hazardous material storage area inspections
    • Coordinate waste shipments with EHS Engineers, EHS Specialists, and waste disposal contractors
    • Perform weekly storm water inspections per the SWPPP
    • Perform tasks related to Spill Response/Prevention Plan
    • Implement the Spill Prevention Countermeasures and Control Plan (SPCC) throughout the facility
    • Order and maintain adequate spill supplies, such as spill pads, empty drums, secondary containment, and other equipment necessary to maintain safe handling and correct disposal of hazardous waste
    • Assist departments with proper disposal, spill prevention, and clean up
    • Respond to any spills that are reported
    • Perform environmental compliance and due diligence audits
  • Health and Safety
    • Perform boots on the ground safety oversight by identifying and correcting work place hazards and unsafe conditions
    • Monitor employee exposure to job and chemical hazards as regulated by OSHA permissible exposure limits
    • Assist in the implementation and compliance of site-specific safety policies
    • Coordinate with the EHS engineers and EHS manager to develop and implement new safety policies as required
    • Assist in the creation of job hazard analysis (JHA) and personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments
    • Coordinate and conduct EHS emergency response drills and trainings as needed
    • Perform department specific safety surveys using inspection forms to ensure employees are utilizing safe work practices such as utilizing proper PPE, wearing fall protection, minimizing hazards, etc.
    • Ensure notification and corrective actions are put in place when any unsafe condition is presented or found throughout the site
    • Perform inspections of emergency response equipment
    • Assist the EHS engineers in accident and mishap investigations when necessary
    • Ensure the site fire prevention plan is being enforced
    • Assist in lifting operations to ensure safe work practices
    • Assist in vehicle recovery and retrieval efforts to ensure safe work practices and environmental-compliant practices
    • Inspect and restock COVID-19 PPE stations around the facility
  • Inspections
    • Perform inspections for all of the following: hazardous waste accumulation and storage, universal waste storage, eye wash/shower, outdoor equipment stormwater collection areas, construction SWPPP BMP’s, industrial SWPPP BMP’s, weekly safety inspections, first aid kits, fire extinguisher, emergency lighting/exits, self-contained breathing apparatus, spill prevention countermeasures and control plan, fork lift, boom lift, scissor lift, fall protection equipment, and lifting straps/slings inspections

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 2+ years of experience implementing and overseeing aspects of an environmental health and safety program

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience implementing and developing environmental health and safety plans and policies
  • Experience with emergency response crews in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water
  • Familiarity with hazardous waste storage and satellite accumulation areas
  • Experience in performing boots on the ground safety oversight
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated strong propensity for hands-on work and attention to detail in either academic or career pursuits
  • Ability to multi-task, to manage shifting priorities and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision
  • Experience working in a construction/industrial environment
  • Ability to communicate well with technicians and engineers
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to work all shifts, overtime and/or weekends as needed
    • Estimated start times - 1st shift: 7 AM, 2nd shift: 7 PM
    • Rotating work schedule: Sunday - Thursday, Monday - Friday, Tuesday - Saturday
  • Able to stand for long periods of time, climbing up and down ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs. unassisted
