MATERIALS TECHNICIAN, PROCESSING

This role is for a materials technician that will work in a state of the art alloy development lab supporting SpaceX materials engineers to develop the next generation of alloys used on Starship, Starlink, and ultimately on the mission to Mars.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • General and day-to day preparation, programming, operation, maintenance, and care for air and vacuum furnaces
  • Execute a variety of metallic sample preparation and post processing including arc melting and hot/cold rolling
  • Air and/or vacuum heat treatment and/or quenching of samples
  • Setup of data acquisition systems including hardware and software
  • Perform general frame, equipment, and fixture builds and modify as needed
  • Maintain and use precision calibrated tools including balances, micrometers, calipers, etc.
  • Detailed documentation of testing parameters, equipment setup, and other possible variables
  • General lab upkeep including cleaning, organization, inventory management, etc.
  • Expediting samples across the SpaceX campus between engineers, testing labs, etc.
  • Performing basic machining, cutting, and grinding/polishing tasks to support processing lab

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in science, technology, engineering or math; or at least one of the following:
  • 1+ years of experience in metal processing industry (melting, rolling, forging, heat treating, characterization)
  • 3+ years of experience programming/operating air and vacuum furnace equipment performing heat treatments
  • 3+ years of experience with custom instrumentation implementation experience (data acquisition, pyrometers, pressure sensors, etc.)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to multitask and rapidly change roles and responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment
  • Strong computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), Atlassian JIRA, and work order systems
  • Experience working with metal processing equipment (arc melter, rolling mill, heat treat furnaces)
  • Welding and fabrication skills
  • Experience using various types of hand tools and/or power tools
  • Experience programming robots
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to work off-shifts and available for overtime and weekends if needed
  • Able to wear appropriate PPE for furnace, metal processing, and machine shop environment
  • Able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. unassisted. Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position
