MECHANICAL ENGINEER, HVAC (FACILITIES)

SpaceX is currently seeking talented individuals for a Mechanical Engineer position on the Facility Engineering team in Cape Canaveral. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will oversee design, construction and operations of HVAC systems that are critical to production and launch. You will be accountable for overseeing existing system performance and modifications, new system design and construction, companywide specifications/compliance, capital project management and preventative maintenance efforts.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as a primary technical advisor on the HVAC design, construction, controls and equipment operations across all production, launch and general facilities
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew
  • Analyze existing asset performance and find ways to optimize existing systems
  • Work with internal customers on HVAC design requirements, construction schedules and costs
  • Set priorities and drive agenda on all install and repair projects to meet schedules
  • Manage external design consultants, contractors, technicians, and equipment suppliers
  • Design and build building automation systems to remotely monitor and control equipment
  • Monitor critical production and launch assets, identify failure modes and ways to improve reliability
  • Oversee HVAC preventative maintenance programs
  • Prepare plans, details, specifications and cost estimates for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and general piping systems
  • Confer with internal teams to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information
  • Establish and coordinate the maintenance and safety procedures, service schedule, and supply of materials required to maintain equipment

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or other engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of professional experience with HVAC system design, environmental sensors/components, industrial system monitoring, and/or data collection systems

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design software
  • Professional Engineer license
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and schematics
  • Strong fundamental understanding of psychometrics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamic processes and their relation to HVAC related applications
  • Familiarity with building and or process heating/cooling load calculations to derive HVAC equipment specifications. Experience with hand and software-based derivations
  • Professional experience with clean-room system design and maintenance
  • Familiarity with HVAC/facility monitoring hardware and software
  • Familiarity with hands on experience trouble shooting hydronic and air side equipment (i.e. chillers, cooling towers, air-handling units, HEPA filtration, packaged DX units, split DX units, air distribution, and industrial filtration/ventilation)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, wind, open ocean
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • When necessary, must be willing to work long hours and weekends to support launch and critical project timelines
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral
