OPTICAL NETWORK DEPLOYMENT ENGINEER (STARLINK)

One of the most ambitious missions that SpaceX has undertaken to date, the Starlink satellite constellation is our solution to providing reliable internet to the entire world.  We are looking for a talented optical network engineer to join our Starlink Network Engineering team to help build and operate a network with global scale. You will be part of a team with significant impact on the service delivered to our customers around the world.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build global DWDM networks to interconnect Starlink PoPs
  • Improve network performance and reliability of DWDM networks
  • Define and measure system performance metrics, perform capacity planning, failure detection and remediation
  • Assist in DWDM designs, capacity augmentation and optimization deployments
  • Assist in updating system configuration and firmware
  • Assist creating processes that help operate and build our DWDM network
  • Automation for optical network devices, operations and deployment tools
  • Assist in architecting how Starlink satellite assets will integrate with more traditional ground networks and optical systems
  • Troubleshoot complex problems and develop innovative solutions day to day on our network

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 4+ years of professional hands-on experience operating optical networks in service provider, cloud or web-scale networks
  • Professional operational experience in a Linux production environment
  • 2+ years of professional experience with Python and/or bash scripting

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical or engineering discipline
  • Strong knowledge with Layer-1 troubleshooting (datacenter, transport, DWDM, optics, circuit troubleshooting, activations, etc.)
  • Familiarity on service provider networks including but not limited to:
    • Connectivity (Ethernet, IPv4, IPv6 and MPLS)
    • Routing (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS)
    • Internet services (DNS, DHCP, NTP)
  • Background on network automation and Python
  • Experience with hands-on work in bringing up network infrastructure
  • Experience creating documentation and procedures
  • Cisco, Ciena, Nokia or other industry certifications

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to do some travel domestically and globally in the future when needed 
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
  • Must be available for on-call rotations

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
