OPTICAL NETWORK ENGINEER (STARLINK)

SpaceX is building a worldwide fleet of gateway stations to support the Starlink network. These gateway stations make up the internet interfacing backbone of the network. Our site design team is responsible for working with external network providers to communicate technical requirements, design site layouts in direct coordination with these vendors, and arrange external contractors to build these sites. The design team is also responsible for coordinating deployment of SpaceX hardware and technicians to these sites when they are complete. Our team is working with vendors and contractors around the world to provide this critical infrastructure to make the Starlink system work.

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Design, build, and deploy Starlink’s ground optical transport network
  • Create test plans, templates and strategies for block and system level tests, to test integrated networking and ground systems solutions for both function and performance, including reliability
  • Manage and expand network interconnections between Starlink gateway sites and datacenter points of presence
  • Improve and accelerate ground network activation processes, including effectively troubleshooting connectivity issues and driving system software improvements
  • Drive creation and maintenance of processes to facilitate quickly building, testing, and activating gateway network circuits
  • Iterate optical transport network and gateway site system configurations to drive better system level reliability
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for negotiating technical aspects of supplier and service provider contracts
  • Mentor and train gateway team engineers and analysts

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mechanical, electrical or electronics engineering, physics
  • 3+ years of professional experience with planning, deployment, or maintenance of an optical network

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience designing, deploying, and operating a robust and diverse optical transport network
  • Experience with optical network analysis, planning, implementation, and monitoring tools and practice
  • Understanding of IP networking fundamentals
  • Deep understanding of service provider networks including but not limited to:
    • Data center and WAN connectivity
    • Optical link budget
    • Project management
    • Equipment Interoperability testing
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, project-oriented team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Hands-on experience bringing deploying network infrastructure
  • Knowledge of fiber optic cable specifications
  • Experience creating documentation and procedures
  • Experience running projects independently

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
