SATELLITE PRODUCT LEAD 

The spacecraft engineering team in Hawthorne is    growing to support our R&D satellite programs that are pushing the boundaries of in-space capabilities. Our missions support scientific research, classified national security space and commercial opportunities. As we grow our classified mission manifest, weare looking for a Satellite Product Lead to join our team.

As a Satellite Product Lead, you will have the opportunity to lead the overall satellite program development engineering effort. You will be primarily responsible for the success of satellite missions, acting as a deputy program manager to ensure reliable performance, adherence to all critical requirements, and implementation of program sustainability. You will be part of the larger Spacecraft Engineering organization and interact with all engineering disciplines to resolve new engineering issues as they arise. You will also coordinate with production to implement any changes required for mission success and sustainability. As the product lead for satellite missions, you will be responsible for design integration of all technical aspects of the mission and technical communication to customers regarding the engineering status for the mission. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as lead engineer for satellite missions, with overall engineering responsibility for the development and operation of SpaceX’s satellite products across all disciplines, ensuring that the integrated hardware / software / ops schedules meet mission need dates and execution priorities are clear
  • Evaluate and plan all engineering for satellite scalability to ensure strategically effective and reliable product growth for vehicle design iterations and deployment
  • Lead system level product reviews (critical design reviews, flight readiness reviews, etc.) for design iterations ensuring execution is consistent with product roadmap  
  • Manage system performance throughout the product lifecycle by working with interdisciplinary teams to meet objective capabilities
  • Participate in satellite missions as the lead engineer to provide back room engineering, navigate complex vehicle trades or under-defined projects, and operational support to the operations and integration team
  • Provide engineering updates on satellite development efforts to customers at meetings, major reviews, and as otherwise required
  • Identify projects to improve rate and reliability and drive those projects to completion
  • Autonomously keep a pulse on emergent risks to reliability and schedule, and surface concerns to leadership
  • Report overall program status and critical path items to management in order to drive company decisions

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Engineering leadership experience
  • 2+ years of engineering experience working with spacecraft and national security or scientific research missions

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Active Top Secret, Top Secret SCI or DOE Level Q Clearance
  • Experience with interdisciplinary spacecraft development engineering projects with a track record of success; interdisciplinary engineering fundamentals and multidisciplinary project execution is the key to success in this role
  • Technical interface experience with customers on satellite programs
  • Hardware and operational development experience on spacecraft systems

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Travel to vendor sites may be required
  • Travel to launch and test sites may be required
  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
  • An active clearance may provide the opportunity for you to work on sensitive SpaceX missions; if so, you will be subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing
