SR. TOOLING BUILD ENGINEER (STARSHIP)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own manufacturing, schedule, and sourcing of critical production tools
  • Create accurate manufacturing planning by interpreting technical drawings and documents with regards to the manufacturing and fabrication processes
  • Interact with Numeric Control (N/C) programmers, welders, machinists, shop personnel, outside suppliers and engineers to ensure flawless and timely execution projects
  • Source, retain, and advise new and experienced vendors from a technical perspective
  • Collaborate with vehicle production engineers and tooling designers on better design for manufacturing
  • Communicate progress to leadership, engineering, and production teams regularly; including presenting and executing on opportunities for design changes that would accelerate fabrication
  • Creatively work projects based on company priorities to meet and exceed aggressive need dates
  • Develop the standards, fabrication methods, and sourcing strategies used by the tooling organization
  • Design and lead the fabrication and sourcing of tooling aids, supporting equipment, and specialized hardware to enable rocket production

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, aerospace engineering, or other engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of experience working in or supporting a shop fabrication environment as an engineer/process planner/supervisor
  • 5+ years of technical project management or manufacturing design experience

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Tooling manufacturing experience within the aerospace, automotive, or other large format fabrication industries
  • Project management experience in a fast-paced prototype fabrication shop environment
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods for large precision structures and equipment
  • Detailed knowledge of quality standards for typical fabrication and production products
  • Experience integrating hardware and harnessing of automated equipment
  • Experience integrating hydraulic and pneumatic controlled systems
  • Detailed knowledge of Siemens NX or similar CAD and PLM packages
  • Strong communication skills with both peer engineers and shop floor technicians
  • Proficient with all types of hand tools and basic fabrication equipment
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Understanding of basic structural analysis and solid mechanics as it relates to fabrication

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. unassisted, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying may be required to perform the functions of this position
  • Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility is required
  • Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • Flexibility to travel to alternative SpaceX production sites and vendors, up to 50%
  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
