About the Role

The Athletic is seeking an Editorial Operations Manager responsible for supporting the day-to-day integration of our editorial and HQ businesses, including content marketing programs, local market activation, budget management, and editorial partnership creation and implementation. The role will also oversee T&E budgets and support the new hire onboarding process. 

With a 425-person editorial staff and a growing HQ tasked with driving engagement and subscriptions, we need a strong collaborator with a creative mind and business acumen. The ideal candidate is equally adept at devising a marketing partnership as they are building process and long-term strategy. The sports media industry is an ever-evolving space, and therefore this position will be comfortable with ambiguity and thrive as a self-starter. The ideal candidate is willing to roll up their sleeves and take on tasks big and small in support of our broader mission to change how sports fans consume media.

The Editorial Operations Manager will work hand-in-hand with our General Manager and the editorial leadership team, as well as a cross-functional HQ group including Product, Communications, Marketing, Finance, Legal and Analytics, to help The Athletic leverage best-in-class journalism to reach new and existing subscribers in North America. This position will report to the General Manager. 

Responsibilities

  • Design and build processes and strategies focused on leveraging The Athletic content to drive subscriptions and engagement
  • Prospect, cultivate, develop and maintain relationships with brands, websites, and agencies while building partnerships to drive editorial initiatives by market and vertical
  • Maintain accurate and timely business estimates, budgets, forecasts, and administrative paperwork for leadership
  • Partner with Editorial and Marketing teams to come up with new content initiatives, and with Product to develop tools to help Editorial engage subscribers
  • Optimize the editorial marketing and partnership strategy from kick off through execution and campaign recaps
  • Draft and own quarterly OKR’s in line with our overall strategic plan and objectives
  • Requirements

  • 3+ years of digital operations, partnerships or marketing experience, ideally in editorial/media, sports or a start-up environment
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Deep sports knowledge along with deep sports/entertainment rolodex
  • Creative thinker pertaining to content promotion and partnerships
  • Creative, strategic mindset in which no task is too big or small
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
