About the Role

The Athletic is seeking a Managing Editor for The Athletic Indiana. This is a senior role leading a growing staff of ambitious and talented writers. The ideal candidate will have managed an editorial team, overseen creative and cutting-edge content, run financial budgets and have boundless energy for telling great stories. This position reports to the Group Managing Editor.

Responsibilities

  • Editorial oversight of coverage of Indiana sports and management of dedicated full-time staff
  • Big-picture, conceptual vision for the vertical, including long-term direction; generating and planning story ideas; editorial platforms; expansion opportunities
  • Day-to-day management of the short-, mid-, and long-term edit calendar and assignments, including:
  • Daily maintenance of the city and writer budgets within Smartsheets
  • Editing, producing and publishing stories via WordPress
  • Promotion and curation of stories
  • Collaboration with staff on story ideas
  • Provide feedback to reporters to help improve their work
  • Set goals for staff
  • Understanding SEO and best practices
  • Use real-time metrics to assess performance and adjust appropriately
  • Coordinating credential requests for staff, as needed
  • Oversight and administration of the vertical’s social media accounts
  • Overseeing the vertical’s financial budget, including projecting month-to-month expenditures and managing travel
  • Identifying and onboarding freelance writers, as needed
  • Collaboration with national sport verticals and other local markets
  • Collaboration with HQ on business/marketing initiatives
  • Requirements

  • 5-10 years of experience in digital sports journalism, including at least three years of direct editorial management
  • Significant copy-editing background
  • Must be comfortable both with line-editing and overall story construction and development
  • High-end knowledge of major professional and collegiate sports
  • Role will be based in Indianapolis
