Strategic Initiatives Manager - Wayfair Delivers

Wayfair is redefining the way customers buy online and one of the key pillars of that strategy is to create a truly differentiated customer experience for large parcel items (e.g., couches, vanities). To enable this differentiated experience, Wayfair is investing heavily to create the first-ever national large parcel supply chain all the way to the consumer’s home. Wayfair Delivers is an exciting, fast-paced, and high-visibility initiative and we are looking for team members who can help disrupt the status quo and redefine an industry through the ultimate home delivery.

Wayfair Delivers is our employee driver delivery program, which serves as the center of innovation for last mile delivery at Wayfair. In this role, you will lead, design, prioritize and implement initiatives that support our long term strategy to make recommendations for carrier operating models that can scale and provide an industry leading customer delivery experience. The right candidate has the ability to develop strong relationships with both corporate and field partners and can flex between detail oriented (in the weeds) and high level strategy work. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Build and execute on a strategy to improve the cost and operational efficiency of our Delivery Team operations
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to develop our tools and current metrics to determine metrics of success for an optimal carrier
  • Manages strategic support for resources critical to operations such as fleet
  • Partner with key cross-functional leaders across Transportation, Operations, Legal, Finance,Training, Compensation and Tech/Product teams to create alignment in strategic approach
  • Build strong relationships with frontline teams to design programs that best suit their needs and the reality of the operation. 
  • Develop, champion and manage joint initiatives with our Delivery Operations teams to create stronger collaboration and partnership as well as unlock new areas of value 
  • Strategic Initiatives could include:
    • Evaluate and iterate current tools/resources to ensure they support our long-term strategy Ex: P&L (and other metric visibility), Delivery Team Compensation/Incentives
    • Manages strategic support for tools/resources that our Driver Managers and Delivery teams need to operate optimally, Ex: Fleet Management, uniform strategy, staffing strategy
    • Create programming needed to support long term strategy Ex: Training Programs (to  support warehouse to wheels, labor sharing with warehouse)
    • Leverage data and analytics to develop new strategies to drive performance and cost effectively deliver Wayfair product to customers 
  • Able to occasionally travel to sites to see initiatives in action and learn our operation ~10% of the time

Key Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years of work experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required - quantitative major a plus
  • Good judgement. Ability to manage through ambiguous scope and think through how operational execution impacts metrics and determine what is “right” for the customer (Delivery Teams, HDO, Wayfair transportation, actual customers) 
  • Creative problem solving. Ability to think both creatively and critically. Willing to think outside the box and challenge the status quo, while also fairly evaluating all possible solutions in making strategic decisions
  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills. Able to analyze KPIs, including the ability to translate analyses into a logical, convincing business narrative. Able to grasp complex issues and look beyond the obvious.  
  • Team player. Willingness and ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment.
  • Comfortable working in the field to gather feedback from frontline employees. 
  • Track record of driving tangible results in a fast paced/ambiguous environment
  • Comfortable working with Excel/Sheets
  • Ability to manage/mentor junior members, whether directly or indirectly
