We are hiring our first Principal Software Engineer to be the technical leader and visionary for Search & Recommendations.  From tens of millions of products, Search & Recs provides the most relevant recommendations for every single customer across Wayfair’s placements.  Our technology serves personalized recommendations within milliseconds and our services are called over one billion times daily.  

In this role, you will be our team’s most senior technical visionary, developing our future technical roadmap and ensuring that our engineering and data science teams are building the world’s best discovery platform for home. 


What You'll Do:

  • Act as a multiplier across the engineering organization. Actively participate in larger Wayfair architecture discussions to unlock:
    • API consistency, discoverability, reuse
    • Code quality
    • Platform observability
    • Integration patterns across teams (i.e. Domain driven design, event driven arch)
  • Be recognized as an  “enabler” who makes multiple teams more productive through tooling, working on the meta problem of engineering and ML development in particular as a process
  • Encourage and promote a culture of innovation, results and world-class engineering across the wider engineering community

What You'll Need:

  • Extensive experience across a range of contexts, with a preference for candidates with large-company, start-up and platform building experience
  • Hands-on experience driving platform transformations within high-growth environments at scale
  • Deep machine learning engineering exposure - knows how models should be trained, built, deployed, and served.
  • Experience with big data technologies
  • Experience designing microservice architectures
  • Deep knowledge of information retrieval technologies, e.g., ElasticSearch
  • Experience with large scale distributed systems
  • Superior organizational and analytical skills with hypothesis-driven problem solving and turning data into actionable insights
  • Ability to collaborate and influence at all levels across business and technology 
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
