The Team

We are looking for a Senior Manager: Economist with a background in causal inference to join the Customer Algorithms team at Wayfair. Customer Algorithms is a team of data scientists and economists that solve an array of challenging problems focused around reduced form measurement of order lifts given product price changes, structural modeling of long run demand curves and substitution patterns, and optimization of product margins. We partner closely with Product Managers and Engineers to deliver pricing solutions across 7+ Wayfair catalogs including our international sites. We are looking for a senior manager that excels at pushing for rigorous scientific achievement, seeks to build cross-functional relationships, and excels at coordinated development and deliverables across teams.

What You’ll Do

  • Define and drive the science vision for a newly formed team with an ambitious charter to model long run customer demand including:
    • Design of customer pricing experiments
    • Development of measurement solutions using cutting edge causal inference methodology
    • Structural demand modeling to project long run pricing outcomes and explain customer behavior
  • Partner with Product Managers and Engineers to:
    • Maintain a 12-month cross-functional roadmap 
    • Design & develop robust ETLs
    • Identify new product opportunities
  • Manage your team’s investment across a portfolio of projects 
  • Work with business leads to influence product direction and business strategy

What You’ll Need

  • Ph.D. in economics or another field performing quantitative causal analyses with a modern toolkit (quantitative marketing, political science, applied statistics, etc). 
  • 3+ years of experience in causal inference in industry, consulting, or academia. We also welcome applications from economists with less experience, whom we’ll consider for our economist and senior economist job openings.
  • Strong intuition about causal inference, applied econometrics, and applied microeconomics, including a wide and deep applied econometric toolkit. Some experience with machine learning and industrial organization is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively work with business leads and data scientists, including strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to synthesize conclusions for non-experts, and desire to influence business decisions.
  • Genuine interest in collaborating and mentoring other scientists on the team and across Wayfair. 
  • Experience implementing models in Python is a plus.
  • Prior experience working with large datasets, leveraging tools like Spark, Hive, Airflow and experience with Google Cloud Platform is a plus.
