The Payments team’s mission is to provide a reliable, secure & scalable platform that enables Wayfair to provide the widest range of payment options to our customers through a world-class frictionless experience.

We are building a cross-functional group of polyglot software engineers, security engineers, data engineers, data analysts, and product managers. Our goal is to move fast, deliver value iteratively while ensuring the stability & correctness of our mission-critical payments systems.

We are establishing  truly global distributed systems with consistency requirements implemented as a set of well-bounded micro-services that communicate over low-latency synchronous and asynchronous APIs. Intrigued? Read on and apply.

As an Engineering Manager (Payments) you will have the opportunity to empower your cross-functional team to contribute to building some of the most resilient domains in our organisation. And we need your help to further strengthen, empower and support the engineering organisation by bringing engineering best practices and operational excellence to the table.

What you'll do:

  • Grow and support an engineering team with 5 to 8 members
  • Be accountable for the systems your team is building including technical design, development, testing, deployment, production observability, and production incident management
  • Envision, shape and deliver the technical landscape enabling a high growth organisation at scale
  • Balance calculated risks, trade-offs and consequences in prioritizing and optimizing for sustainable time-to-value and high-quality engineering
  • Own the development and career growth of your team members
  • Maintain and continuously improve agile delivery and engineering practices.
  • Attract, onboard, develop and retain diverse top talents, while fostering an inclusive and collaborative team and culture (our latest DEI Report)
  • Design an agile process that ensures the team is consistently shipping value while executing on their roadmap
  • Partner with your Product Manager to define business roadmaps, OKRs, and success metrics. Be the glue between the business and technical worlds, internalizing the Payments domain and being able to substitute the team’s PM when necessary

What you bring to the table:

  • Experience in the JVM ecosystem, preferably using Java
  • A strong background in SOA, and Microservice architectures that served as business and/or technical platforms.
  • Experience of leading interdisciplinary teams in a fast-paced agile environment.
  • Hands-on software development leadership including coding, design, reviews and testing.
  • Being a passionate and engaged collaborator and communicator, with the ability to influence partners and peers at different levels.
  • Practical experience and ability to coach and advance the team’s practices with pairing/mobbing, TDD, CI/CD.
  • Experience hiring and mentoring junior and senior engineers.

Nice to have experience with:

  • Previous experience in Payments/Fintech (not a must)
  • Spring Boot
  • Cloud Providers like GCP or AWS
  • Containerization environment with Docker & Kubernetes
  • Big Data toolset and concepts (e.g. Data Warehousing, ETLs, OLAPS)
