Merchandising Engineering exists at the heart of Wayfair's e-commerce operations. We construct the language and vocabulary that the company uses to understand and communicate about products. We are platform builders who own the data and applications that powers Wayfair's vast product catalog, influencing nearly every area of the customer and supplier experience.

We are building a growing array of cutting-edge, highly scalable services that support critical operations throughout the company (such as international expansion, multi-box merchandising and logistics, and highly configurable products, to name a few.)

Our mission is to create stable, scalable, and flexible infrastructure that allows Wayfair to give each customer an ideal experience. If you are interested in solving high-impact operational and technical challenges at the core of a highly-scaled e-commerce business alongside great colleagues, there is no better place to be.

What You'll Do:

  • Be a voice of technology to the CTO and VP+ level, representing the work of multiple highly-productive engineering teams.
  • Extend Wayfair’s foundational product data structures to act as a force-multiplier for the rest of the company and to enable new customer experiences and operational capabilities. Some examples include:
    • Maturing support for highly configurable and complex products, is estimated at $650M+ annual revenue opportunity.
    • Evolving multi-box capabilities; addressing historical limitations that hinder further geographic expansion (e.g., cross-continent universal identifiers)
    • Building scalable platforms for teams throughout Wayfair to easily consume and understand product identifiers and relationships
  • Take ownership for decisions and drive results forward, working with and alongside engineering teams. Our history as a scrappy start-up can still be seen in our decentralized decision-making process that empowers all employees, and especially leaders, to act as “owners” of the business.
  • Set technical strategy for a major domain within Wayfair, and contribute to technical strategy for the Catalog Engineering department more broadly. Build the technical platform that allows hundreds of teams within Wayfair to communicate effectively about our catalog of >15 million products, each of which can have upwards of billions of variations, in order to serve upwards of 500,000 orders / day to 30M customers per day.
  • Mentor and provide technical vision to a team of ~30 engineers and Catalog Engineering dept of >350 engineers.

What You'll Need:

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering, with preference for candidates with a mix of start-up and large-company experience
  • Omni-directional communications -- consistently pushes needed information in a tailored way to the right audience. Stays informed about multiple teams and major projects simultaneously, allocating time and attention dynamically as needed.
  • Architectural and system design expertise and knowledge of developing tech to identify and develop scalable, maintainable solutions to a wide range of challenges.
  • Hands-on coding ability - and willingness! -  capable of directly building key product features, functional prototypes, architectural elements, or anything else needed.
  • Ability to make strategic trade-offs between technical and business needs; finds pragmatic solutions that balance technical purity with speed-to-value
  • Collaborative working style that builds consensus and sells change through persuasive data, logic, and delivery of information. Mentors team members around them into more effective engineers.
