Wayfair is a leader in the e-commerce space for all things home. We live and breathe modern technologies. Tremor is a fast paced systems engineering team with a startup feel but working with platforms at a massive scale.

We’re looking for smart folk to compliment the Tremor team. We care about systems engineering of mission critical infrastructure in a 24x7x365 operational environment with asymptotic peaks at certain times of the year. We are particularly interested in systems engineers with solid Rust experience, SRE sympathy and experience working on mission critical production infrastructure in 24x7x365 operating environments. We prefer team players with a balanced ability to both be mentor and mentee in a multi-disciplinary team setting.

On the Tremor team as a Senior Systems Engineer you’ll have plenty of opportunities to share your strengths, build up others, all while delivering on an open source project (Tremor) with external and internal customers. You will work in a global team, with cloud-native deployments in a diverse and inclusive environment. If this sounds like fun to you, please continue reading and do consider getting in touch.

What You’ll Do:

  • Responsible for working with software developers and operators to ensure that the system is designed, developed and deployed using proper analysis, design, development and testing disciplines.
  • Drive the design of distributed event-based system components, infrastructure and tools primarily in the Rust programming language.
  • Participate in, help evolve and enhance the diverse, friendly and welcoming open source Tremor community and the wider OSS ecosystem at Wayfair.
  • Analyze existing systems and processes to understand their functional control and data plane surfaces and identify non-functional characteristics and performance characteristics and failure modes.
  • Lead the design, coding, testing, implementation, documentation and develop mentoring, training, demo and solutions for stakeholders of the system ensuring that non-functional constraints and goals are observed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve methodologies, practices and processes of the full software development and operational lifecycle of delivered system components and services.
  • Engage with the wider open source community as an expert guide, evangelist and advocate for Tremor, identifying possible partnership opportunities throughout the community for Tremor and Wayfair.

What You’ll Need:

  • Experience contributing to and working with open source software
  • Experience designing and developing integration software in event-based systems, developing compiler infrastructure and language runtime environments
  • Experience with concurrency, synchronization and performance engineering in primarily UNIX-based software
  • Experience with developing distributed systems (high availability, consensus, backpressure, ring-based topologies, CRDTs, event sourcing, FSMs)

Good Things to Have:

  • Strong foundation in systems development on UNIX, particularly LINUX and operating systems internals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, consulting skills in a diverse workforce
  • Comfortable in a polyglot development environment: Rust, C/C++, Python, Erlang, PHP, C/C++, JavaScript, Java/Scala/Kotlin and others
