Atlassian is continuing to hire for all open roles with all interviewing and on-boarding done virtually due to COVID-19. Everyone new to the team, along with our current staff, will temporarily work from home until it is safe to return to our offices.

Atlassian is looking for a Principal Engineer to join our Statuspage Team in downtown San Francisco.

Statuspage is a highly visible product used by many of the world's top 1000 SaaS providers such as New Relic, Twilio, Dropbox and Github for status, uptime, and incident communication. We have extremely high expectations around reliability and a unique traffic profile, which makes it a very interesting place to be an SRE. Our team works from the application layer down into the infrastructure and have a huge impact on the product.

At Statuspage you should be comfortable building robust and resilient systems that shrug off massive traffic spikes. You’ll work on our primary Ruby on Rails application as well as our AWS based infrastructure to make sure that Statuspage stays up when our customers are down. You’ll sit right next to product engineering and collaborate on new features to maintain our standard of operational excellence.

Your day to day work will include things like:

  • Partnering with development and product to design and build highly available and scalable systems (our SRE’s write and ship a lot of code).
  • Provisioning infrastructure using AWS and Atlassian's Docker-based PaaS (we use Terraform for Infrastructure-as-a-code).
  • Mentoring engineers with an emphasis on operational excellence.
  • Identifying and implementing performance and scaling improvements for our systems.
  • Implementing effective monitoring and logging strategies for all the services overall (we use SignalFx and Splunk).
  • Maintaining and improving CI/CD pipelines for our services (we use bamboo).
  • Serving on our on-call rotation to remediate and resolve critical outages (for minimal MTTR).
  • Remediating vulnerabilities across application stack.
  • Owning mission-critical projects that focus on scalability, security and reliability for the product.
  • On your first day, we’ll expect you to have:

  • Deep expertise developing and deploying web applications in cloud environments.
  • Experience setting SLOs and SLIs for large-scale web applications.
  • Experience working with relational databases like PostgreSQL.
  • Experience working with dynamic languages like Ruby, Python, and Javascript.
  • Experience working on CI/CD tools.
  • Experience working with container deployment and orchestration technologies at scale with strong knowledge of fundamentals.
  • Experience being on-call and familiarity with processes around incident management/postmortem analysis.
  • The ability to prioritize existing technical and infrastructure debt, and experience to build and execute a plan to pay it off.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and motivation to work as a partner with development teams.
  • It’s great, but not required to have:

  • Experience working on caching technologies such as Varnish and Memcache.
  • Experience tuning and optimizing databases in cloud environments such as AWS RDS.
  • Experience building disaster recovery solutions for distributed systems in cloud environments.
  • Why you’d want to work here
