Job Title: Vice President, People Ops

The VP, People Ops will lead the existing People Ops team and our partners across the organization to support human resource-related strategic planning and execution. The VP, People Ops will be responsible for strategy design and driving our efforts around employment processes and policy, recruiting and onboarding, total rewards including compensation, equity, benefits and recognition, (from selection to implementation and  administration), performance management, learning and development, diversity, equity and inclusion, employee relations, compliance with requirements as a healthcare organization and in accordance with local and federal laws and will contribute to the evolving use of, and selection of new, human resources-related systems within the department and for all team members. The VP, People Ops will also play an integral role in our ongoing efforts to support our team through the COVID-19 pandemic and our eventual return to some form of office work and to evolve our thinking and approach to helping fight systemic racism and under-representation in genomics, in healthcare and more broadly as an organization.

The VP, People Ops will partner across the organization, interacting with team members across departments and levels spanning part-time contractors to Executive Leadership and our Board of Directors. This leader must be adept at working with outside vendors and knowledgeable about key decision-criteria for organizations related to the areas of focus mentioned above. 

This role will report to the Chief Operating Officer and the People Ops team will report up to them. This leader will be responsible for creating and delivering on both a People strategy for the organization as well as an organizational strategy for the People Ops team that will support the effective execution of that strategy. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead our People Ops strategic planning effort, incorporating feedback from other People Ops leaders as well as cross-functional leaders to help drive successful performance to established company, functional and team goals. This includes driving our functional strategy as well as the organizational strategy and planning to support it.
  • Motivate and develop people team through team building and goal setting
  • Develop and lead our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy and ensure we are implementing and reinforcing practices across the spectrum of our efforts and interactions that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Own HR compliance and assess readiness in close partnership with legal and finance on everything from medical, 401(k), FMLA, CFRA, SDI, LOA, EEO-1 filings, 5550s, OSHA, Wage and Hour laws, etc.
  • Determine where policy changes and/or new policies are necessary for our workforce in order to create a more inclusive and equitable work environment
  • Drive and contribute to our company culture - develop and drive company-wide programs and initiatives that support employee retention, satisfaction, and engagement. This includes an annual performance management process and salary review, annual compensation benchmarking including stock option grants renewal (alongside Finance, Legal, COO and CEO), workforce planning and organizational change, engagement survey deployment and action planning.
  • Co-develop/maintain, distribute and ensure appropriate acknowledgement of company-wide policies alongside Legal and ensure organization-wide compliance with various Federal and State labor laws, including ensuring the employee handbook.
  • Liaise with outside counsel on employment and other Human Resources matters, including immigration requirements. Stay up-to-date on all changes to local, State and Federal program requirements from a DOL, IRS or other entity and keep Executive Leadership abreast of any changes or impact to Genome Medical or our individual team members. Attend informational webinars on rapidly evolving topics such as COVID to ensure that Genome Medical is well-versed in both requirements as well as optional programs that might impact our team.
  • Partner with the Executive Leadership team to prepare and present materials for the Board, as needed.
  • Coach leaders and peers and model a culture where positive and constructive feedback is embraced to evolve leadership and drive company performance.
  • Build our corporate learning and development strategy and lead the implementation of that strategy to continue to offer professional development opportunities to our employees that align to their individual needs as well as the company’s goals.
  • Own our HRIS system administration, maintenance and any future consideration of changes to said system.
  • Oversee payroll for employees, interns and contractors alongside Accounting.
  • Effectively address employee relations issues, including but not limited to employee complaints, harassment allegations, etc. Work with people managers to conduct employee relations coaching sessions, investigations, performance plans and terminations.
  • Lead the ongoing development of HR reporting and analytics, evolve key people operational metrics and dashboards to support effective  decision making and business needs.
  • Lead the benefits renewal process, including reviewing the financials of the previous year’s programs alongside our benefits broker and Finance, driving mid-year check-ins with insurance providers, assessing the priorities of our employees and creating a strategy to address those items, reviewing alternative offerings, preparing Board-level reviews of the program as well as presentations to management and employees.

Requirements and qualifications: 

Must have:

  • Active SHRM membership 
  • Demonstrated experience activating, collaborating and informing stakeholders across functions, tenures and levels at a company. Bachelor’s degree required in organizational behavior, communications, psychology or other related field
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in Human Resources/People Ops in the healthcare/biotech/technology industry owning HR/People Strategy within a rapidly scaling environment with a distributed, multi-state workforce comprised of both non-exempt and exempt employees, including progressive experience as a strong People Leader 
  • A track record of exercising sound judgment and acting with integrity in all interactions such that you are able to operate with a sense of trust between you and your stakeholders.
  • A change-oriented mindset - an interest in building what we don’t yet have and maximizing or evolving what we do have in place to better support our team and our ability to meet our mission. This will involve effectively guiding the company through these changes as well.
  • A strong sense of accountability over the pieces of the business you will be responsible for as well as the areas that you may only be consulted on to ensure we continue to drive our efforts forward as a team.
  • A keen ability to diffuse escalated situations and find resolutions that parties involved clearly understand and accept, even when the outcome is a difficult one.
  • Interest in providing mentorship and guidance to others in the organization 
  • Up-to-date understanding of current employment laws, regulatory requirements impacting healthcare and employers generally, compensation practices
  • Experience with using data to drive human-resources-related decision-making, setting and delivering on KPIs
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and an ability to design and pull your own reporting to ensure timely and effective communication of goals and results to stakeholders
  • Experience with multiple HRIS, CRM, LMS (learning management system), Recruiting, Benefits Administration systems and an excitement to bring that knowledge to bear to help drive the maintenance and future selection of the right tools for Genome Medical..

Nice to have:

  • An MBA with a focus on Organizational Behavior or other Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Experience working in a fast-growing, start-up environment (strongly preferred)
  • Formal training as a certified coach
  • Public and private company experience
  • Ability to travel to South San Francisco Headquarter
