Position Description:  

The Motus Technology team is seeking an experienced leader to mentor and scale a small team of 5-8 engineers. You will play a key role in building and developing server-side applications, drive the technical strategy, and nurture the growth of engineers. You will be part of the Driver Experience team, responsible for the end-to-end driver journey across our mobile app, backend services, and web dashboard  

To be successful in this role as the Manager, Software Engineering you must thrive in a creative, collaborative, and agile development environment. This is an ideal role for someone who has successfully built scalable, extensible software on a Java stack and is looking to advance their career in technical leadership.  

Position Duties:  

  • Influence, mentor, and lead the technical performance and success of direct reports 
  • Contribute to the design and development of server-side applications  
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to deliver on the execution of engineering initiatives and objectives  
  • Cultivate a positive work environment for collaboration and the continued growth of the team  
  • Establish guidelines for engineering in collaboration with other leaders, engineers, and team members  
  • Guide the planning process and effectively communicate with stakeholders to identify and resolve issues  
  • Responsible for recruitment, development, performance management, and professional development of direct reports  
  • Contribute to and drive the evolution of Motus’ Engineering environment  
  • Articulate both business and technical implications of decisions to support the successful development of software applications and advancements  
  • Oversee and supervise day-to-day requirements and team output  
  • Ensure that the requirements for both business and engineering are clearly outlined  
  • Proactively communicate priorities, development status, and team challenges to stakeholders and leadership  

Desired Skills & Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and/or equivalent work experience preferred. 
  • 2-3+ years of experience in a management or technical leadership position  
  • 5-9+ years of experience developing server applications  
  • Experience with Spring, Spring MVC, Hibernate, and JPA  
  • Experience with Object Oriented Programming (OOP), design patterns, and domain driven design  
  • Experience with modern web development such as AJAX, HTML5 / CSS3, single-page applications, mobile web development  
  • Proficiency with JavaScript and JavaScript frameworks  
  • Experience leading and mentoring a fully remote or geographically distributed engineering team  
  • Experience working in a Scrum environment and working knowledge of Agile methodologies.  
  • Excellent English and communication skills.  
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects simultaneously.  
  • Demonstrated experience in the establishment and streamlining of development practices to ensure the highest quality of software and operational experience  
  • Experience influencing strategic direction of team and alignment with business objectives  
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with team members and leadership  

Where required by law, Motus provides a reasonable range of compensation for specific roles. The pay range for this role is $160,000 - $170,000. Actual compensation will depend on a number of factors, including the candidate’s relevant experience, technical skills, and other qualifications. This position is eligible for company benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance with an employer contribution, flexible spending or health savings account, life and AD&D insurance, short-and long-term disability coverage, paid time off, employee assistance, participation in a 401k program with company match, and additional voluntary or legally required benefits.
