The Senior Android Systems Software(SW) Engineer will be responsible for architecting and maintaining an Android-based software platform to power Penumbra’s virtual reality therapy solutions. Development for the system is light on UI and heavy on stability and performance, and benefits from strong Linux and Android system fundamentals. The Penumbra Immersive Healthcare REAL system platform provides new therapy experiences for patients suffering from a wide range of conditions and supports neuro and motor rehabilitation.  

What You'll Achieve

  • Build a Software platform to establish a VR therapy solution and ecosystem
  • Key member of the Systems Architecture team working to help prototype and define technology roadmaps and future products.
  • Drive technical decisions and implementation of core system services to support application developers using the REAL SDK, including screencasting, networking, and our proprietary body tracking system
  • Optimizing performance, and reliability of the overall software architecture. 
  • Designing systems for long term support and architecting for backward compatibility
  • What You Bring

  • Experience with the architecture and implementation of software across Android platform and Kernel software stack, including system services, and inter-process communication 
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field
  • Proficiency developing Java and/or Kotlin with an in-depth understanding of OS concepts 
  • Experience building and managing custom Android images from source
  • Experience with OpenXR including experience with novel hardware controllers or tracking systems 
  • Experience with software integration on Android platforms, identify performance bottlenecks in the system and take ownership of the related optimizations. 
  • Experience developing tools to simplify debugging complex systems. 
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills 
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize assignments while handling various projects simultaneously 
  • Understands relevant security, privacy and compliance principles and adheres to the regulations, standards, and procedures that are applicable to the Company
  • 8+ years of experience, with at least one previously shipped commercial product, or equivalent combination of education and experience
