Technical Program Manager
Location: Berkeley, California (remote)

The Technical Program Manager is responsible for planning, driving, and delivering on Rigetti’s most ambitious development efforts.  You play a critical role in ensuring that our entire portfolio of individual projects is aligned and building towards our goal of creating the world’s most powerful computer.  Our machines are complex systems that pull on the expertise of world-class physicists, engineers, and technicians - our TPMs are polymaths that are capable of discussing things like nano-fabrication, microwave circuitry, test, and evaluation best practices, and techno-economic decisions all within the same day.  As a seasoned engineer or project manager, you understand the need to drive consensus between diverse groups of stakeholders and are energized to serve as the glue which holds together our development roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate, plan, and own technical development roadmaps.  You will chart realistic, ambitious roadmaps to meet company-wide technical goals owning the outcomes and contingency planning.
  • Track and monitor program progress and performance.  You will ensure that our development programs stay on track, surfacing risks and issues that need to be considered, and document any schedule slippages that may occur. 
  • Translate product goals into concrete specifications and deliverables.  You hold the “top-down” view of our QC platforms and work to ensure that all “bottom-up” development work converges on that big picture vision.
  • Surface and drive consensus on system-level tradeoffs.  You will be at the center of our technical issue resolution processes and will need to be able to our groups of experts through complex decision analysis
  • Brief stakeholders on program status.  You will be responsible for creating clear and concise briefing materials and communicating status to technical and executive stakeholders.
  • Document schedules, plans, risks, issues, and blockers. Ensure traceability in all aspects of our development and that we are able to integrate lessons learned.
  • Serve as a hub of information for stakeholders across the organization, and look for ways to increase frictionless information flow.
  • Manage and improve processes.  We are a fast-moving engineering organization, you specialize in ensuring that we have just enough processes in place
  • Look for opportunities to accelerate our development.  You hold the most information about program status and are constantly looking for insights from across the company, external partners, and the greater QC industry that can accelerate our progress.
  • About You

  • 5 years of project/program management experience on complex integrated hardware, software, cryogenic, and/or RF systems
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent technical experience
  • Excellent communications skills, comfortable tailoring messaging based on stakeholders.  Can speak technically with engineers/physicists or business implications with executives.
  • Experience in a research and development or test and evaluation organization
  • Comfort with data and statistical analysis
  • Ability to turn ambiguous goals into actionable plans
  • Comfortable leading cross-functional teams, and demonstrated experience driving consensus across technical teams
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with technical domain experts across both scientific and engineering disciplines.
  • Nice to Have

  • Advanced degree in Engineering Discipline or MBA
  • Experience with complex manufacturing processes - especially direct exposure to MEMS fabrication
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering concepts including Model-Based Systems Engineering, Test and Evaluation Methods, Systems Lifecycle Planning, and Failure Analysis approaches
  • Deep understanding of HW and SW project management best practices, both Agile and Waterfall approaches
  • Experience with JIRA/Smartsheet/Gitlab for project management and planning
  • PMP Certification
  • Prior start-up experience
  • Exposure, interest, obsession with quantum technology or alternative computing paradigms
