AUTOMATION & CONTROLS SPECIALIST - 2ND SHIFT

SpaceX's Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket (collectively referred to as Starship) represents a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship will be the world's most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, with the ability to carry in excess of 100 metric tons to Earth orbit. Drawing on an extensive history of launch vehicle and engine development programs, SpaceX has been rapidly iterating on the design of Starship with orbital-flight targeted for 2022. Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) is a key component of building the world’s most advanced re-usable rocket.

Working for the TPS Production team, the Automation & Controls Specialist will be responsible for building, installing, and commissioning new automation assets, panel builds, and electromechanical controls systems. Additionally, the Automation & Controls Specialist will be responsible for troubleshooting complex controls issues within existing SpaceX critical assets, with the focus on adding long term repairs that increase the overall reliability of production systems, rather than implementing quick fix solutions. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure automated systems are operational at the highest possible uptime, resolving issues fast, while suggesting and implementing long term reliability improvements
  • Troubleshoot and modify PLC software where required and feedback changes to design engineers
  • Promote 5s principles of organizing and sustaining efficient and presentable team workspaces
  • Improve on existing production and R&D robot application programming
  • Create, redline, modify, and correct electrical and pneumatic schematics for automated equipment using EPLAN Electrical/Fluid
  • Wire and commission electrical and pneumatic automated control systems
  • Design and commission basic PLC and HMI software applications
  • Participate in the specification, qualification, and acceptance testing of new systems
  • Build control panels to NFPA 79 & UL 508A standards

 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 3+ years of automation experience in a manufacturing and production environment
  • 3+ years of experience with working with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated hands-on skill in fault finding, mechanical system troubleshooting, and solid problem resolution skills
  • Experience with Siemens Tia Portal using SICAR the standard
  • Kuka robot programming
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight
  • Strong work ethic and drive to succeed as part of a high functioning team
  • Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment
  • Highly motivated with strong interpersonal skills; a team player, yet able to work independently when necessary
  • Exceptional problem solving and communication skills, creative, and has strong organizational skills as well as documentation
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety), NFPA 79 & UL508A codes
  • Occupational trade school qualification in an instrumentation or electrical based field
  • Fundamental understanding of engineering principles behind electronic equipment, instrumentation, and commonly used industrial equipment
  • Select and size electrical and electromechanical components such as servo motors, controllers, and VFDs
  • Experience working with Vision Systems
  • Experience tuning PID controllers
  • Experience with industrial bus protocols such as Modbus, Profinet and EtherNet/IP
  • Industrial machine networking experience
  • Electrical schematic drawing experience
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity, independently drive project progress, and manage multiple priorities
  • Knowledge of high-reliability processes and related documentation practices

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2nd Shift Hours: 6 PM ET - 6 AM ET
  • Ability to wear and obtain certification in the wearing of an air respirator
  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
  • General physical fitness is required for some work areas, tight quarters and physical dexterity is required
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 35 lbs. unassisted
  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends, as needed
  • Flexibility in work schedule, supporting all shifts/overtime, as necessary, to support business needs
  • Must be willing to travel
