PROJECT ENGINEER, GATEWAYS

SpaceX services a diverse range of clients and their payloads. The spacecraft engineering team in Hawthorne is hiring for R&D satellite programs that are pushing the boundaries of in-space capabilities. Our missions help solve real-world problems including supporting scientific research and various commercial opportunities. As we expand our mission manifest, we are looking for experienced engineers to join our team.

As a Gateway Site Development Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and activating our mission critical ground stations (also known as gateways). These global ground stations make up the internet backbone of our new satellite network. Role responsibilities include everything from site acquisition to activation. You will work directly with regulatory, engineering, supply chain, business development, and simulation teams. Once new sites are sourced, our team drives prompt construction, activation, automation, and process improvements. The ideal candidate will have a strong multidisciplinary and project management background.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own the business result of global ground infrastructure design, construction, and partnership development
  • Assess candidate ground station technical feasibility using established engineering tools and protocols
  • Manage vendors, third party contractors, and internal teams to arrange permitting, construction, and deployment of sites
  • Develop tracking tools and automation to facilitate efficient ground station deployments
  • Support the design and prototyping of future ground station hardware
  • Build and manage databases to track and visualize system performance and deployments
  • Lead coordination across all internal SpaceX contracting, legal, regulatory, engineering, logistics, and technician teams
  • Generate site drawings for civil and electrical systems using 2D and 3D CAD software

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, electrical engineering, or other technical discipline
  • Professional experience in a technical project management role

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience managing technicians, contractors, or construction projects
  • Experience prototyping and testing new products
  • Understanding of civil construction, residential and commercial electrical systems, and construction permitting/regulations
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX or equivalent 3D modeling software
  • Experience with fiber optic networking and datacenter design
  • Familiarity with global shipping, packaging, customs compliance, and logistics
  • Familiarity with common utility AC and DC power distribution
  • Proficiency coding in SQL, Matlab, Python, C++, or similar
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary projects
  • Familiarity with planning and deploying ground stations
  • Business development and/or regulatory experience
  • Excellent project management, communication, and organizational skills
  • Self-starting and able to identify areas for improvement with minimal direction

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to travel at least 15% of the time, to US or international ground station sites
  • Must be willing to work long hours and occasional weekends when necessary to support launch and critical project timelines
  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings, and climbing hand over hand
