SENSOR DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER, LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS

The Sensor Development team designs, builds, and tests innovative sensing solutions that are critical to making life on Mars possible. This role specifically supports development and qualification of flight critical Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) sensors for Starship. The ECLSS sensor development engineer will work on this highly interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to select and design an array of gas species sensors.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete industry survey of gas species sensor technology options 
  • Work with internal and external teams to determine appropriate system level requirements
  • Evaluate gas species sensor performance throughout expected flight environments
  • Provide guidance on system design based on sensing limitations and performance capabilities
  • Develop an integrated sensing suite including electronic schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Work with cross-functional teams to integrate sensing suite into vehicle systems
  • Work with manufacturing and production teams to refine sensor designs for production and support early production and sensor calibration
  • Provide full-lifecycle engineering support for the ECLSS sensing suite

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, math, or engineering
  • 2+ years of experience working with gas species sensors

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • Experience working with and/or testing gas species sensors, such as carbon monoxide, oxygen, or any other gas species sensors
  • Experience selecting and/or designing gas species sensors of any type 
  • Experience designing test equipment for gas species calibration and validation
  • Data analysis experience in Python, C/C++, and/or Matlab
  • Strong cross functional project management skills and the ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones
