SUPERVISOR, DEVELOPMENT TEST

This position is a Development Test Supervisor for the Starship Structures Test team. The role is highly multidisciplinary and this individual will be tasked with a wide variety of test equipment and test article fabrication and operations in support of the SpaceX mission. The team consists of technicians, engineers and specialists working closely together to build mechanical and fluid assemblies, modify and integrate test articles, build data and control systems, and execute test operations. The ideal candidate is highly skilled with mechanical and electrical disciplines, hands-on, flexible, a quick learner, works well in a fast-paced environment, and possesses a can-do attitude.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise a team of technicians and specialists and lead day-to-day operations, assembly, and test tasks. Team will perform a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, and operations tasks. Examples – lifts of heavy equipment, assembly of large weldment, fabrication of gas, hydraulics, and cryogenic liquid plumbing, construction of data and control systems and wiring harnesses, machining and welding, and configuring and operating test stands and software
  • Responsible for the test shop, yard, and all hardware used by the team in Starbase, TX. Develop and expand the test shop / yard to be an effective location for the team to work
  • Acquire and maintain the equipment necessary for the team to accomplish its job
  • Plan, schedule, assign and participate in work to meet test schedules. Coordinate with other teams for necessary support (cranes, transportation, etc.)
  • Ensure employees have the training, tools and materials they need to carry out their duties
  • Monitor and approve employee time keeping records
  • Communicate how successful performance will be measured and assess performance
  • Deliver critical feedback to the team on a daily basis
  • Ensure tasks are performed safety and with high quality
  • Assess candidates and make hiring decisions
  • Provide a conduit of communication to the engineering team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 3+ years of leadership experience in a test, manufacturing, or operations environment
  • 5+ years of experience with one of more of the following; working with and troubleshooting mechanical systems, high pressure fluid systems, instrumentation (strain gages, load cells, temperature sensors, deflection gages, accelerometers, or pressure transducers), data and control systems, or test operations

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a technical field
  • A&P License
  • Proven ability to rapidly change roles, responsibilities, and learn new skills while working in a high-paced and challenging work environment
  • Experience building, activating, and operating test stands
  • Experience with high pressure pneumatic, hydraulic and cryogenic fluids systems
  • Experience building, configuring, and operating data and control systems
  • Experience interpreting fluids system schematics and procedures
  • Experience coordinating with and influencing teams that you do not have direct control over
  • Skill in operating machinery and various hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity
  • Proficient with standard computer software (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook) and some experience with CAD software (NX, TeamCenter), database / reporting tools (SQL), and software tools (Python, LABView)
  • Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is necessary to preform job functions
  • The ability to lift heavy objects is required in this position (up to 25lbs unassisted)
  • Must be able to work at elevated heights
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, etc
  • Must be able to work in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • Must be available for overtime and weekends as the schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required
