What we do:

Our Staff engineers are the end-to-end owners who drive the process of designing, building, and deploying extracting insights from petabytes of data to help our clients makes data driven decisions to grow their businesses.

You will be building a forecasting solution which provides real time responses while operating on a trillion-records-a-day dataset. We often find that off-the-shelf products and approaches struggle with our volumes of data and that is the main challenge and source of fun you will have. The forecasting system our team operates is the backbone of a lot of TTD features and at the core of our business model.

Our system performs every day, 24/7, serving global traffic. We build a distributed system in a highly collaborative environment, utilizing a broad range of technologies. Our data engineers work on finding solutions to algorithmic, optimization, and scale challenges in everything we do.

What you’ll do:

You will act as a technical leader on multi-month, multi-person projects. You will work closely with many stakeholders to understand the Why behind products you will be building and use this knowledge to drive your engineering decisions and instil this understanding on the team.

You will own products end to end: design, implementation and deployment to cloud levering internal tools developed by cloud and IaaS teams at TTD.

You will serve as an example to junior engineers and help them grow faster by providing guidance in MR reviews and sharing your knowledge.

Who you are:

  • You have a track record of technical leadership on multi-month, multi-engineer projects with high level of ambiguity
  • You like to engage with stakeholders and help engineers in the team understand the “why” behind the work
  • You are a generalist with focus on working with big datasets (tens of of Tb) using technologies like Spark and building backend applications in languages like Java, C# or Scala exposing REST or gRPC APIs
  • You are able to think about performance and inspect running the production system to understand if its performance is CPU, Memory, Disk or Network bound
  • You worked with SQL databases and you are a confident user of SQL language
  • You have experience in deploying containerised software. Ideally you have experience with Kubernetes or you are a confident user of docker and have grasp on docker internals
  • Ideally you worked with column-oriented databases, e.g. Vertica or ClickHouse
  • You worked within cloud environment
  • You are familiar with Linux and able to use shell
  • You can efficiently debug problems with multi-component system (e.g. Spark Job with custom code on EMR driven by Airflow did not complete, what happened?)
  • You are an open person ready to share your knowledge with other team members via MR reviews or other forums
  • You work with confidence and without ego. Our engineers have deep knowledge and exercise a high degree of leadership in their daily work. You have strong opinions that are weakly held, defensible ideas, and advocate for what you believe is right. You are also adept at identifying and evaluating trade-offs, willing to be proven wrong, and quick to walk through fire to support your fellow teammates.
  • You value, seek out, and foster diversity. We are a global team from many diverse backgrounds, with different experiences and perspectives. To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be skilled at finding and building from common ground.

What you know is less important than how well you learn and innovate. We don't need engineers who know all the answers; we need engineers who can invent the answers no one has thought of yet, to the questions yet to be asked. What and how you can contribute is what’s important to us. Our consideration is not limited by the kind of education you have or the specific technologies you have experience with. Variety of technical challenge is one of the best things about working at The Trade Desk as an engineer, but we do not expect you to know every technology we use when you start. What we care about is that you can learn quickly and solve complex problems using the best tools for the job. Our culture runs much deeper than just having fun together (though, we do that well too...) – the people we want on our team are trust-builders, generous givers, scrappy problem solvers, and gritty pursuers of excellence. Does this sound like you? If so, we welcome your application and the chance to meet you.
