The Who, What, Why and Where

Twilio IoT/Wireless is the IoT business unit at Twilio. Twilio IoT/Wireless provides an IoT connectivity and device management platform that offers embedded developers a one stop shop for building connected devices, keeping them secure, and managing them through their lifetime. Twilio aims to significantly accelerate IoT adoption by providing as much critical but common infrastructure as possible, so that IoT teams can focus on delivering unique value to businesses and consumers.

Who?

Twilio’s IoT/Wireless Team is looking for an Embedded Software Engineer who has the passion to contribute in designing, developing, deploying and operating connected devices helping companies build and manage their fleets of IoT devices.

You should have some or all of the following:

  • A passion for learning and an ability to persevere until problems are solved.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 2-3+ years of engineering experience with a working knowledge of C, C++, analysis of disassembled code, integrations with higher level languages. Experience with the ARM ISA is an advantage.
  • Be comfortable analysing and debugging embedded devices at the PCB level. Using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and protocol analysers, you are capable of progressively narrowing down where a problem might be, in order to get hardware devices to talk to each other on a PCB.
  • Have, and further develop, a good knowledge of digital electronics, standard peripheral interfaces, methods for hardware specific optimisations, the interaction between the application and low level operating system functions such as interrupt service routines.
  • Thorough understanding of fundamental software engineering, e.g. algorithms, data structures, concurrency, object oriented programming concepts.
  • Familiarity with version control concepts as well as unit and integration testing methodologies.

What?

As an Embedded software engineer, you will be solving problems with integrated circuits at the firmware level. This role is to work on the low level firmware, connectivity software and operating system that runs on the hardware devices, as well as their integration into cloud infrastructure.

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • BE AN OWNER: You will hone your skills to write maintainable code with extensive test coverage, working in a professional software engineering environment (with source control, dev/prod release cycle, continuous integration with extensive automated testing).
  • DON'T SETTLE: You will learn cutting-edge skills by tackling complex problems in embedded computing.
  • EMPOWER OTHERS: You will be spending some of your time infusing your technical expertise and know-how in the team through code reviews and whiteboarding sessions. You will spend around 60 percent of time coding, and the remaining 40 percent collaborating with the team, analysing automated test results, exploratory testing, reviewing code, and looking forward.
  • DRAW THE OWL: You will be working with our Tech Lead to set up best practices for the area of ownership. You will be working with C, C++, Python and Rust. You will work in concert with dedicated hardware engineers to review and validate new hardware designs. You will collaborate with the Cloud team to develop end-to-end solutions to specific custom requirements.
