The Legal & Business Affairs team of Vox Media is seeking an Employment and Litigation Attorney who will be responsible for a wide array of employment and litigation matters. We’re looking for a business-minded attorney with deep experience in all aspects of employment law advising and experience with litigation.  This role will be the primary point of contact for the People team and will advise on all aspects of employment advising in the employee life-cycle. In addition this role will help manage the litigation docket along with other team members. 

This position reports to the VP, Associate General Counsel while working closely with other members of the Legal & Business Affairs department and internal business teams and leadership across the company. This position is perfect for an attorney who has demonstrated leadership skills, a broad range of experience with employment law advising, and who thrives individually and within a team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Provide comprehensive and practical legal advice and counseling to our People team and managers on all aspects of the employee life cycle.
  • Advise on federal, state and local employment laws and issues related to performance management and terminations, hiring, employee/contractor classification, DEI+, wage and hour, leaves, accommodations, discrimination/harassment, and other workplace issues.
  • Provide advice and support for internal investigations and employee relations matters. 
  • Draft, review, analyze and negotiate employment-related agreements and policies, including our employee handbook and related policies, offer letters, deal memos, severance agreements, and bonus compensation plans.
  • Collaborate with the People and Communications team on internal communications and advise on legal risks.
  • Research and monitor developments in employment laws and develop and implement internal practices and policies to achieve compliance with applicable laws and regulations at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Assist with employment, copyright, defamation, and other claims. Work closely with outside counsel to review pleadings, advise on strategy, and support internal discovery efforts.
  • Manage and work with outside counsel to support immigration matters.
  • Assist with other legal matters as needs arise.

WHO YOU ARE

  • JD from accredited law school and licensed to practice law and in good standing.
  • 4+ years of relevant employment experience, preference for candidates with both law firm and in-house experience. 
  • Familiarity with employee benefits or unionized environments is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, creative problem solving, good judgment, and an ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Experience interacting with and advising all levels of leadership, including summarizing risk assessments, communicating complex topics, and providing thoughtful business guidance.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Resourceful and proactive, with a strong ability to balance legal risk with practical business needs.
  • Proven ability to independently handle multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
  • Works well under pressure and manages multiple high priority projects and deadlines.

WHERE YOU’LL WORK

This job is located in New York or DC and does not have an in-office requirement, however the expectation is that the candidate lives close enough to one of our offices to come in 2-3 times per month.

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The salary range listed below represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered to the candidate selected for the position will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience.
