Legal Counsel (maternity cover)

Wayfair is looking for a Legal Counsel in Berlin to support our European legal department on a fixed-term contract until May 2024. Covering for one of our in-house lawyers on maternity leave you will closely collaborate with the legal team members in Berlin, London and Boston as well as partners in all areas of our European and global e-commerce business, from engineering, to talent, marketing, customer service, supplier support, fulfillment, logistics and anything in between - it’s a diverse, agile and rewarding practice area and an opportunity to advance an in-house career in the e-commerce world.

What You'll Do

As part of a small legal team,  you will meet eye-to-eye with managers from all business units and work on day-to-day legal matters as well as key initiatives in Europe, providing excellent legal advice while sharpening your business and market knowledge. The lawyer in this role must be able to think strategically and apply sound judgment in order to provide pragmatic, risk-balanced advice. To succeed in this role, candidates should be self-motivated, creative problem solvers and capable project managers with a business-oriented approach and attention to detail. Tasks include:

  • Working in close collaboration with business partners and providing actionable advice.
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts with internal and external parties in Europe.
  • Managing legal disputes and handling external counsel.
  • Developing solutions in unfamiliar areas of law and jurisdictions.
  • Providing practical legal training to various business functions in Europe.

What You'll Need

  • At least one law degree (1. Staatsexamen or equivalent). Demonstrable specialisations in relevant legal fields are welcome (e.g. employment law)
  • Fluent in German and English with excellent legal negotiation and communication skills, both oral and written in German and English.
  • Minimum 1 year professional experience in an international law firm or in-house. Experience in e-commerce/technology is an advantage.
  • Self-directed, motivated individual who is able to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision, customer service (internal and external) attitude and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to embrace new legal systems and unfamiliar areas of practice with a hands-on attitude.
