Wayfair Physical Retail is laying the foundation for global physical stores. While Wayfair will continue to build and expand our e-commerce business, there are tremendous opportunities to also serve our customers via a more traditional retail environment. Today, the large majority of home goods sales in both the U.S. and global markets still include at least one visit to a physical store. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to be the technical leader for Wayfair’s Physical Retail team. In this role, you will be our team’s most senior technical architect. You will develop our technical strategy and roadmap while partnering with other teams and leaders across the Wayfair tech organization. Together, we will deliver a seamless digital and physical experience for our customers.  You’ll be a core leader within an exciting new strategic engineering area for Wayfair!

**This job may be fully remote within the US (in any of the states in which we conduct business), or in a Technology Development Center in Boston, Austin, SFO, Seattle or Toronto.   

What You’ll Do:

  • Drive the technical strategy and roadmap for Wayfair’s Physical Retail platforms.
  • Be highly visible to the senior executive level and across the Wayfair tech community as a representative for Physical Retail 
  • Lead architecture for large cross-cutting projects, such as: Omni-channel Fulfillment, Customer-led Checkout, and Associate Productivity
  • Work with stakeholders across product and engineering to drive initiatives
  • Mentor emerging leaders and engineers to develop skills via collaboration on a variety of projects
  • Leverage data and an understanding of the scope, priorities, and risks of our business objectives to set near- and long-term goals
  • Advocate for availability, quality, performance, scalability, visibility, and automation.
  • Demonstrate a passion for innovation and results through delivery and wide communication 

What You'll Need:

  • Hands-on experience fielding scalable software systems in a high-growth environment
  • Passion for innovation and continuous improvement
  • Superior analytical skills with a track record of using data for hypothesis-based decision making
  • Excellent communication skills; facilitates technology decisions with senior business and engineering leaders in complex or ambiguous situations
  • Experience with GCP, Kubernetes, Java, Kafka, microservices, and multiple DB paradigms
  • Expertise with both mobile and server-side application frameworks and architecture patterns
  • Experience with retail and e-commerce preferred - especially with robust omni-channel platforms
  • 15+ years of engineering experience with a preference for having worked in both large-company AND start-up environments
  • Bachelor's degree in CS or equivalent practical experience

The salary range for this position is USD$228,000 - $240,000 however, base pay offered may vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
