Senior Retail Designer, Cabinetry & Home Renovation

Location: 3232 Lake Ave Suite 1, Wilmette, IL 60091

Overview:

At Wayfair, we believe a home should be as functional as it is beautiful—and that starts with great design. As a Sr. Retail Designer – Cabinetry and Home Renovation, you'll turn customer visions into reality, guiding them through their renovation journey with confidence, creativity, and care. From kitchens and bathrooms to laundry rooms and custom built-ins, you'll craft smart, stylish spaces that reflect each customer’s goals, budget, and style.

You’ll tap into your expertise in cabinetry, bath, and kitchen design. You’ll lean into Wayfair’s expansive product catalog from cabinetry and tile to flooring and plumbing to provide complete solutions for DIY homeowners and professional contractors alike. If you're a proactive problem-solver with a passion for design and sales, and you love seeing a great project come to life, this is your stage.

What Does A Cabinetry and Home Renovation Designer Do?

  • 🗂️ Own the Design Process: Lead cabinetry and home renovation projects from concept to completion. Use 2020 Design Live or similar software to develop layout plans, renderings, and product recommendations based on customer inputs, measurements, and needs.
  • 🔧 Be the Technical Expert: Educate customers on cabinetry construction types (framed vs. frameless), materials (MDF, plywood, solid wood), finishes (painted, stained, laminated), and specialty features (soft-close hinges, pull-outs, and more).
  • 🤝 Deliver Personalized Consultations: Whether it's in-store, virtual, or in-home, you'll meet customers where they are. You'll listen deeply, learn their style and renovation goals, and recommend functional, beautiful solutions tailored to their timeline and budget.
  • 🎨 Connect the Dots from Start to Finish: Develop floor plans, mood boards, 3D visuals, and complete product packages. You'll manage each project’s full lifecycle—from early design to final purchase—and offer support through post-order services to ensure a smooth renovation experience.
  • 🛁 Educate + Inspire: Stay ahead of design trends and new materials, bringing fresh ideas to every customer interaction. Help customers see how tile, flooring, kitchen, bath, and plumbing products can work together to create the space they’ve dreamed of.
  • 📊 Leverage Design + Sales Tools: Use analytics and digital tools to build persuasive space plans, presentations, and shopping experiences that help grow the business while putting your creativity to work.
  • ⚙️ Thrive in a Dynamic Environment: With evolving customer needs, product assortments, and promotions, you’ll stay focused, flexible, and ready to pivot—all while delivering high-impact experiences.
  • 📈 Always Be Selling (ABS): Every interaction is an opportunity. You’ll generate new leads, build customer rapport, and close on personalized solutions that help grow your pipeline and the store’s performance.
  • 🌟 Contribute to Store Success: Help with visual updates, floor sets, and inventory tasks as needed—and bring your ideas to the table! We’re a team that builds (and wins) together.

You’ll Thrive in this Role if You Have:

  • 🛠️ Design Experience: 3+ years of experience in kitchen, bath, cabinetry, or home renovation design. You know your way around spatial planning, product selection, and what works (and what wows). Bonus points for 1–2 years focused on cabinetry.
  • 🖥️ Technical Proficiency: You’re confident working in design software like 2020, AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or similar tools. Familiarity with CRM/POS systems (like Salesforce) helps too.
  • 🧠 Sales Know-How: You’ve got a track record of meeting or beating your sales goals—and you know how to build trust while selling big ideas and beautiful designs.
  • 🧳 Flexible Schedule: Retail hours mean nights, weekends, and holidays. You’re ready to show up when your customers need you most.
  • 🎓 Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in a related field is preferred, but your experience and design sensibility speak volumes.
  • 👥 Leadership + Training Experience: If you’ve mentored or trained others in a retail or design setting, even better! You know how to lift up your team and lead by example.
  • 📚 Professional Certification (Preferred): NKBA, NAHB, NARI, or KBDI certifications are a plus and help you stand out as a true renovation pro.
  • 🏡 End-to-End Product Knowledge: You bring the full package—from cabinetry to tile—and have the confidence to guide customers through every step.
  • 🤗 Collaborative Spirit: You thrive in a team-focused environment and take pride in supporting your peers just as much as your customers.
  • 📋 Top-Notch Organization: Strong attention to detail, follow-through, and communication make you a trusted partner from consultation to completion.

Additional Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • 💪 Physical Activity:Frequent standing, walking, and reaching with hands and arms; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, and crawling.
  • 🧎 Mobility & Movement: Frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching throughout the day.
  • 📦 Lifting Ability: Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • 👀 Vision Requirements: Includes close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • 🌡️ Temperature Flexibility: Comfortable in environments with varying temperature conditions.
  • 🔊 Noise Tolerance: Occasional exposure to moderate noise levels and physical activity.

⚠️ Safety Awareness: Minimal exposure to workplace or environmental hazards—must adhere to all safety protocols.
