Our team is working to ensure Zoox’s hardware and software are safe for operation in the real world through the use of simulation. As part of this process, the team is responsible for designing and running large numbers of simulations to generate key autonomy metrics.

In this role, you will be responsible for producing, maintaining and improving the simulation library.  These simulations are run weekly and are the key to generating the team’s metrics which are used to make company-level decisions for the deployment of our driverless robots on public roads. Due to their visibility, these simulations are expected to be of a high caliber as they help to direct the development resources of the company.  The ideal candidate will have an attentiveness to details, the ability to communicate across multiple departments and technical levels, as well as the curiosity and drive to dive into specific issues as they arise. You should expect to work with cross-functional partners across Simulation, Planning, Prediction and Perception among others.

In this role, you will:

  • Help scale a library of synthetic scenarios.  This entails reading through requirements, breaking down complex functionality into modular and reusable components that need to be built, understanding how complex systems interact, and communicating in a clear and concise manner with the relevant teams.
  • Find success by being a fast learner, having curiosity, focusing on results, developing intuition for prioritization, and learning to deal with ambiguity.
  • Need to think at a systems-integration level, as well as dive into details to resolve specific low-level technical issues.
  • Be highly cross-functional, so the ideal candidate should be able to understand how the various systems work at a high level and effectively communicate how our team’s systems work to cross-team technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Be able to dive into large, complex systems that are already in place, as well as help design and build new systems or tools from scratch to enable automation and scale.
  • Be responsible for helping to deliver mission-critical metrics to the executive team to drive major roadmap decisions. A key skill will be the ability to effectively balance short-term priorities with longer term improvements.
  • Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Python
  • Bachelor’s in computer science, applied mathematics, engineering, or other quantitative area
  • At least 7 years of industry experience in systems engineering and/or software engineering
  • Collaborative team player with strong written and in-person communication skills
  • Bonus Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD Degree in a quantitative area
  • Familiarity with autonomous vehicle systems
  • Experience with quantitative analysis of complex systems, probability and statistics
  • Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $179,000 to $256,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position. Zoox also offers a comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off (e.g. sick leave, vacation, bereavement), unpaid time off, Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights, Amazon RSUs, health insurance, long-term care insurance, long-term and short-term disability insurance, and life insurance.
