The Role:

Generate is seeking an experienced and innovative Head of Biology and Target Identification to join our growing team.  They will be responsible for the identification of targets for the platform. This will include evaluation of targets from the literature and elucidation of new biology leading to new targets.  They will develop a world class group and capability that is different from the extant efforts at other entities – large data set driven, infused by modern computational techniques and automation from inception, and reliant on the newest research tools. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in leading target identification through a deep understanding of biology and familiarity with and ambition around the use of larger datasets.  They will be expected to work closely with our machine-learning and data scientists to develop a “new” way of biology elucidation and target identification.  This is a unique opportunity to shape the next generation of therapies at scale while pioneering a better way doing this kind of science. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and elaborate, with the support of the CSO, CTO and R&D leadership team, a differentiated approach to biology and target discovery based on the most modern tools and methods
  • Forge a team from disparate backgrounds and with different skills (therapeutic, ‘omics, research tools) into a highly effective group pursuing this differentiated approach
  • Develop and oversee a system to identify and validate the targets Generate will pursue
  • Hire and develop employees within the team.  Assign work, provide feedback and coaching, shifting priorities and resources as needed
  • Participate in the overall portfolio decision making for the company
  • Communicate progress regularly to CSO and broader Leadership Team
  • Build and maintain good relationships with the other relevant teams at Generate (e.g., Protein Sciences, Clinical, Preclinical Discovery and Development, and Process Development)
  • Help to evaluate targets proposed by partners and those identified through other business development activities
  • Create and maintain a rigorous scientific culture

Required Skills/Experience:

  • PhD in a relevant Scientific Discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in biology and target discovery
  • Experience with modern data and analysis methods
  • Evidence of creativity in addressing challenging scientific problems
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with proven ability to create and grow high performing scientific teams
  • Display excellent communication and collaboration skills
