Position Summary
Generate Biomedicines is seeking an entrepreneurial and creative scientist to play a leading role in the exploration of Adenovirus Associated Vectors (AAVs) and gene therapies. This is a unique opportunity to join Generate at a critical stage of its development where you will lead efforts to explore the application of machine learning towards the development of AAVs and gene therapies. You will play a pivotal role in the establishment and execution of core expression, purification and functional assessment workflows while actively collaborating with our Machine Learning, Computational Biology and Protein Sciences groups to automate processes and enable high-throughput analysis at an unprecedent scale. We are searching for an enthusiastic, innovative, well-organized, and self-motivated individual who is driven by creation of initiatives from the ground-up and innovating within your domain of expertise by proposing and testing novel hypothesis, approaches and technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development of core workflows to enable high throughput expression, purification, and functional testing of AAVs and other gene therapy delivery vectors
  • Serve as a domain expert to provide guidance in the assessment and application of Generate’s approaches within the gene therapy space
  • Drive creativity in experimental design and troubleshooting to rapidly onboard new capabilities and prototype new ideas
  • Develop and manage relationships with external CROs and collaborators
  • Partner with protein engineers, data scientists and machine learning engineers in a highly collaborative environment
  • Generate hypotheses and design experimental plans to validate novel approaches to address critical challenges in the gene therapy space
  • Presentation and publication of findings and novel learnings at conferences and in academic/industry leading journals

Experience and Qualifications

  • B.S. with 5+ years’, M.S. with 3+ years’, or Ph.D. with 1+ years’ experience in AAVs, gene therapy, virology, or a related field
  • Direct molecular biology experience towards the design and cloning of viral/gene therapy plasmids
  • Strong background in mammalian cell culture techniques utilized towards:
    • The transfection and expression of viral particles
    • The functional assessment of viral particles (such as infectivity, transduction efficiency, viral tittering, etc.)
  • Familiarity with viral particle purification methods and downstream assessment of viral prep biophysical characterization (such as density gradient or column-based purification, full vs empty capsid characterization, etc.)
  • Familiarity with other applicable functional assessment readouts including in vivo infectivity models and next gen sequencing approaches
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, troubleshoot and execute experiments, analyze data, and report conclusions
  • Experience with assay automation, utilization of robotics, high-throughput assay development and/or large-scale data analysis a plus
  • Ability to parallel process and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
